Remember the old 302 Z28? came factory with floating wrist pins on 11:1, shot peened rods, forged steel crank? 3.00 stroke? 290hp@6000? 7200RPM REDLINE! insane lift!! my favorite gm production small block.. i wanna see if anyone has seen a tpi converted 302 i think a 302 with larger bore .060 over maybe..

Have you ever driven a DZ car, no torque ,nothing down low until the cam comes in
TPI intake idle - 4500
DZ cam 3K - 7k
Gives you a operating range of 1500 revs

Now....nostalgia aside no reason to put a motor that wants to wind up with an intake system that wont. Plus..shorter stroke so youll lose torque.


Tuned/tweaked right those motors could scream but believe me stock as they came the Z/28s were 14 and 15 sec dogs sorry to say. Build for torque, my friend

someone over on the LS1tech board built a 302 out of an LS1 block and 4.8 crank.. hoping to making power to 8500... if i remember right.. all it did was push the power band up to 3500-7500.. making almost the same power the regular LS1's were making with bolt ons.. not really good for a street car... road racing maybe..

I've not driven a DZ but I've driven an MO-Code 302 that was special ordered with a much larger cam. Even less torque down low and the power band was way up there. Engine would pull hard even with the tach pegged.

This is actually an easy enough thing to do, 3.0 stroke medium journal crank from an L99 (4.3L V8) a 1 pc 350 block and the appropriate parts to go with it. You could even shove the crank in a Vortec 350 or LT1 and have some nice OEM heads to go on it. I'd probably do it with boost for mpg reasons though, and the conveniences of a roller block. It would make for a nice engine that combined milage and perfromance. I think that it was done in a mag for Drag Week or the likes actually.

yeah i read that.. it wasnt the cam that made it a high revving motor.. it was the combo.. but the motor itself would make one hell of a street car imo, especially in front of a t56 topped with an hsr..
