1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
With regards to Megasquirt:
Are you planing to use the direct coil option for the ignition?
Are you using the relay board?
How far away are you from installing your ECU?
Do you have plans for your FIdle and/or spare inputs?
I have already ran my TPI 350 using megasquirt on a test stand, and it was quite a treat to see (and feel the rumble of) everything runnung as it ought to.

Its MS II Version 3.0
-I'm not using the direct coil option
-We did the relays manually and skipped on the relay board that we used for the fans and fuel pump turn on.
-I hopefully will be installing it this weekend!
-Besides what's listed I have no plans for the spare inputs. Ideas for cool things to add?
It looks like there were IAT sensors because the holes are WAY to small to be from nitrous.

Lots of updates and lots of help! Too bad, I didn't get pictures of most of it because my camera is in the process of getting cleaned and well, I've been working too hard to take many pictures, so this is just a brief rundown over the past week or so, excuse the sparatic and blackberry pictures!
80 LB injectors too short, so it took us some work(per the injector supplier) on spacing...
Mark(roadkill) removing what was left of the heater/ac box:fail:... The previous owner got mopst of it, but the actually empty box was sort of just hanging there.
New shift boot installed, thanks to Coy for the help on this!
Fuel pressure regulator installed and lines hooked up. No leaks!!! With all of the oil feed/return lines and fuel lines it looks busy under the hood although I got rid of a LOT of the things he had on the car.
Wires on and being sorted for the optimum amount of bling...

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Now we are getting down to business!
Head unit on
Blanked out the A/C and heater controls. Going to be moving switches from the console up to here
Completed body harness! Hooked it up yesterday and it all works!
Inside of the car being rewired the way we want it as well!
Dusty looks kind of concerned at the end of this day!!!
BIG work accomplished yesterday!
Got the complete body harness on and working 100%, installed all the supercharger piping, makde sure no leaks again in the fuel system, and got the megasquirt setup to the house. Hopefully we will hear it run in the next couple of days!
Some VERY crappy BB teaser shots!
Note the custom air intake on the top, hahaha

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Thanks man. It's getting trying with all this wiring, but we're getting there!
It RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Horribly, but it runs. Few small issues with getting the MSD box power, but I tapped the factory dizzy wires and ran it to the red(keyed power) of the box, fixed it being 180 * out, and the plug wires hooked up incorrectly and here's what I get. I know it's not much, but for NOT even looking at the megasquirt tune yet, I'm happy for now!
Tonight it's cleaning a lot of wires, redoing the line-lock, and working on the tune!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Well, Mark and I got the entire under hood wiring done and in place. No pictures as I'm taking a couple days off from it, BUT all I have left is the inside wiring, Catch can setup installed, and finding someone to help me get this megasquirt setup tuned. Having a couple issues with that, but I think and hope its all in the tune.
I am planning on posting it's own thread, but ANY megasquirt help here would also be very nice and apprreciated. The problem is spark(besides it running bad).
I beleive it has something to do with the GM/DIS bypass. With it on the car will crank and run for 5 seconds. At that point it shuts the entire car off(via removing spark per the red LED on my digital 6 box). It will do this no matter what I try. Well, IF I turn off the GM/DIS bypass it will crank and stay running at least at idle(won't rev well at this point). As SOON as I cycle the ignition off and back on the third light on my MS(builder of the MS said the third light is the light showing timing retard during cranking) turns off and while cranking the motor the MSD box is not getting a signal(red light isn't flashing on it and no spark to the distributor from the MS). The ONLY way for me to get it to start again is to turn the GM/DIS bypass BACK on, cycle the battery switch, and then the third light will be on. Once that is done I can go BACK into tuner studios and turn the GM/DIS back off to get it to crank and run. If the bypass stays on I can cycle the key/power and it keeps all three lights on(although the car won't start), BUT as soon as I do it with the bypass OFF, once the key is cycled I get two lights and the no start condition.
-I have bypassed the MSD box, same results.
-power to the coil wire has been verified
-The ONLY differnce is the white wire from the MS is not signalling to the distributor when it's not cranking.
-I have verified the MS is getting a tach signal even in no start situations as it cuts the fuel pump on during cranking and the tach in tuner studios is moving while cranking.
PLEASE HELP

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Engine compartment complete minus a catch can! A friend and I have spent hours upon hours drinking gallons of diet coke variations and got all the wiring underhood and about 1/2 done inside the car. Next is just getting it running good. Turbocuda(from my local board) is coming down ASAP to see if we can't get this thing on the road, so that should be taken care of as well very soon.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Couple pics of the latest work... Looks simple, but it was very time-consuming.
Here I am thinking out my next move. Thankfully Mark didn't get a picture of me upside down under the dash. It is very tight under there with a 10 point cage and a seat that won't recline, tilt, slide, etc(passenger only for safety over a certain MPH). IF I had to do it again I'd take the seat out. Luckily I'm 99% done under there I hope.
Finished! Just have to mount the panel at this point, but I'll probably leave it down until the car is running good and figure out a way to make sure it's supported well.

very nice build you got going on there. I went through the same thing with my car over the past 10 years. Its a lot of work but its all worth it in the end when you stand back and look at what you accomplished. Im liking the color too.
Guys, please read my sig.

Well, haven't been updating much as I've been busy trying to get Megasquirt to work right and right now it's not quite figured out. Hope to have it straight here VERY soon.
I have gotten a few things done. Interior is finished besides the MS and MSD wiring, mounted the catch can, etc.
catch can hole made
Mounted
Homemade bracket to fit under the clutch and trigger the two step
Finished switch panel

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Thanks man!
Well, got the car mostly sorted and started tuning on it a little. Played around onthe dyno last night and after figuring out the car had WAY to much timing for this setup, bumped it down to 15* and first pull got
Have more tuning to do at this boost level(peak of 14 for just a sec) and still have a smaller pulley to throw on here. We only pulled it to 5000 so far.
If it's hard to read it made 555@4900 and 587@4800.
Bringing it home tonight to fix the starter, oil leak, etc etc and will hopefully get more dyno time in by the end of the week.

Nice and impressive numbers already. I'm glad to see numbers like this from a tpi 355. I know you've got siamesed runners and other upgrades but you're already showing more power than I hope to put down when I do my new engine later this summer. I plan to run 15-20 psi and will be happy to put down 500 rwhp. I didn't see much info on your cam or which AFR heads you have but looking at your tq peak rpm it seems you have a pretty healthy cam in there.
Can't wait to see where you get this thing to!

Cam is pretty big(was originally gonna use it on a blow-through Turbo setup)
Here are the specs
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...ookieSupport=1
The dyno we are using is a Mustang dyno which notoriously reads lower than a dynojet, so I "should" be clopse to 600 already on one of those, although I don't assume anything.
Once we can spin it a little harder I think the 14 lbs will come on and make more HP as it sits(once it climbs to 14 it starts breaking up) and then pullying down for next week after some fixes and maintainance on it(oil change, plugs, etc) I am hoping for a bit more, but we shall see.
BTW, what timing did your turbo setup like?
Are you using your dizzy as a VR sensor or do you still have the HEI in it?

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
I have it set to pull a couple of degrees of timing when the inlet temps get much above 100 degrees. Inlet temps are normally within about 2-3 degrees of ambient except in this recent hot weather, where I've seen it rise to 120 degrees on hot laps. I haven't looked at this table lately so I'm not sure exactly how much and at what temps.
My ignition is set up to work with the HEI module in place. I drive this car out of town a good bit and I even have my MSD harness made with plugs. If the MSD goes out I can easily bypass it and if the HEI module goes out it's just a trip the the local auto parts store. If the Megasquirt goes out.. well that's bad LOL!
#74
Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
I can still bypass my MSD, and the HEI is out of the loop, so I figured one less thing to break. Oh well, both are working, so it's all good.
Got it home to fix a couple small issues. Oil feed to SC is dripping after a hard pull, starter is almost dead, gonna reroute some plug wires, mount my gauges in my pillar, add a tach, and pulley down for around 8 more psi. Hoping after it's all said and done we hit 700rwhp. I think we can as the pull I posted was the VERY first one after we lowered the timing to 15(no fuel or timing adjustments made at all). When it pulled cleanly I said, well that's enough, let me go home and fix these isssues and come back out with more boost!
BTW, these numbers are all on a Mustang dyno, so I would be higher on a dynojet!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Honestly, I'm not sure. Like I stated it was not running correctly when I bought it. It supposedly made 650rwhp on 24 lbs or something. Setup is now mine and I know what's up with it, so I'm only going off of what I have and know for fact, so up
555 on only 14psi, 4900rpm, a Mustang dyno and the VERY first pull gives me hope of my 700 goal though, so we shall see...

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
The tow is has 3 grade 8 bolts mounted directly to the front bumper mounting support. Works great for a tiedown as well. I need ideas for the rear though!

Video from tuning last night and a few pictures......
Me messing with the megasquirt
The new throttle body in place
Overall it made 661rwhp at 4900 and 719 rwtq at the same RPM(4900) on the Mustang dyno. If you use 12% to convert the Mustang to the dynojet its about 740rwhp/805 rwtq, but those are only guesstimates. The first ones are the only hard numbers I have. Its like it's hitting a brick wall at 4900. On the last pull you can hear it sounds like a rev-limiter. I know TPI is no high RPM motor, but it should pull more than that. Looking into it now...
I have bad pictures of the dyno graph, so I'll upload them as soon as I can get my laptop back on the net.
Ideas on my brick wall?

All of the aero parts are handmade. I have a link with many specific pictures on how the splitter was made, but none of the diffuser yet. I will get some when it gets back to the paint shop though.

They were on the car when I bought it. I believe that they are the old style J&M that are spaced up to give more travel. I'm not 100% sure though, so I'll look into it a little today while I'm at the shop.

I hope that AFR of 14.3 at 20 psi is wrong!!!
Great numbers again though.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Thanks man, but now I have some problems
Now for the bad news. Supercharger was vibrating some, did some research and found out the bolt was loose on the balancer, key broke, and it had just started to spin on the crank
Pulled and cleaned everything and reinstalled with a new key. When the balancer is 100% on, it has some play. I don't want to run it like that, so I talked to TCI today and am going to send it in and see if they can replace or repair it.

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
New balancer fixed my problem , but it almost wasn't was when the crank bolt stripped(after just using the bolt to pull the balancer up.) Thankfully we got it out and the new balancer is nice and tight!
Now I just put it back together AGAIN!

Just read the whole thread, nice work indeed and you work a LOT Faster than I do. Haha
Your "brick wall" is probably valve springs floating. A somewhat aggressive cam and more and more boost might be hanging the valves. AFR probably had good springs but not GREAT springs. My 305 would do the exact same thing and it can get you in trouble if you hit that wall enough times. I melted a plug once while spraying INTO my "brickwall".
Goodluck on finishing it, its only worth it if you enjoy it!

Re: 1987 Supercharged TPI w/ megasquirt/complete repaint build thread
Thanks man. The valvesprings aren't from AFR. they were matched to the cam and boost I am running.
I have since lowered the boost back to 16, its relatively drivable, lowered the vacuum required to open the surge protector, put on a new coil(which has fixed the 4900 rpm wall at least on the street)and got it back to the paint shop. Want to get it painted and the body work finished and its just a few small problems to fix once back on the road, which include
-dipstick loose in block so oil comes out under boost
-more tuning
-going to boost reference the regulator so that I am not using so much of the injector(93% duty cycle at 5k full boost)
Here's a picture of it back at Absolute body.....
Going to block the body tonight....

I had the same problem with my dipstick tube blowing out under boost. After welding an exhaust vac tube in my header and running it to the valve cover. I bought a braided dipstick from summit racing that bolts to the header, and has an o ring seal on the block. It fixed my leak.
