305tpi cam?

I am trying to reach 300hp without killing the gas mileage.
3 in from y pipe back ..no cat... done
air box mods.....done
I am completing the list from suggested mods.

now I am going to do the egr and fuel pressure regulator.
so I want to do the cam and injectors at the same time.

I have a 1989 iroc 305 tpi auto
I was going to put the 5 speed cam in or 1.6 roller rockers
and are mustang injectors the best bang for buck?
All help would be appreciated..thanks

Re: 305tpi cam?

I got good results by installing the following.

Msd Coil & ing box
Headers
1.6 rockers

My car is a 1989 T5 with the bigger camshaft. I had to also install a afpr b/c is was running a bit lean after I installed everything. I have it set now at 50.5 psi and i get about 820,s readings on my O2 sensor. On the injectors I have the bosh III and they work well.

Re: 305tpi cam?

fuel pressure can be a 10hp+ gain depending on psi you run or TPS value with psi, you can change those values. You can run up 60 .64 usually without getting a code for being rich, but its safe, free TPS mod, adjust voltage lol.

OR remove the coolant hoses going to TB, thats at least 3-12hp depending on how hot the car gets.

Headers shorties work, but longtubes always work better, but you need to add at least 6" to the collector to tune it for a 305, even more for a 350, the collector needs to be at least twice the size of one cylinder to help scavange the others, without the exhaust slug seeing it as a restriction.

You can make 135%+ from the exhaust side, rather than the intake, such as a turbo, but even if you only tune the headers, you can make that power difference, with no turbo. Its all the parts together, not just throwing money at it, but you can tune or remedy the restrictions in our cars from our 80's times.

Just build the engine right, with the right improvemements.

Here:
160 thermo (+3hp+)
TB bypass (3-8hp+) if you go from the 195 to 160 and bypass the tb, lets just say its a 10hp gain on a hot day, but at least 5 normally.

Then do a better air filter, at least (+3 hp) but a paper elements fine when its clean, it doesn't restrict in a 305TPI with the stock air intake, just drop in a K&N
Doing edelbrock shorties are great for the price at least (20hp+) and the difference is amazing when you install them, then run some more timing, run at least 8* base timing, but you can run as much as 16 if you run premium all the time, run cheap gas, don't race it, and run less timing, the factory blocks are cheap and suseptible to cold knock.

If you run shorties, you have better ground clearance, you can bolt them on and change nothing, you don't even have to jack the motor up, remove all the sensors, just plugs and re route the plug wires, and buy plug boot protectors from Taylor or someone.

Those mods are the best bang for the buck.

thermo $5, headers $450 or less, look online, craigs list, pressure regulator, buy one online, $50 or less, then just buy a 5/8" to 3/4" adapter for the hoses, then you can bypass the TB and keep your heat and oil cooler!

The 305 is still a good engine, same crank, rods, bearings, and the only difference is the cams usually or the pistons 3.736 vs the 350's 4" diameter piston, thats where the 305 hurts, that small piston, the combustion chamber and the bore, actually shrouds the valves, if you notched the block it would improve the flow, but thats a lot of work, few are willing to do, but my friend put out 301hp at the wheels with bolt ons in his road coarse formula. Just buy the edelbrock headers, do these mods, then later on, but a kit, make your own y-pipe to go to the turbo, put the turbo in the other side of the battery location, opposite side, and make it work, or buy a kit, there cheap prices and they are still great kits, as long as you don't push them way more than they were designed, but any turbo can go to over 100,000 easy and without a wastegate, it will surely implode or bearings fail. But thats the bestmod, and FREE hp! Well almost free lol
