Aluminum heads for L98?

Does anyone make a 180 to 190 head that still uses the centerbolt valve covers and a standard exhaust pattern? I know the Vette L98 fits this criteria but wanted something that flows a little better. I'm thinking of getting my stock iron L98's rebuilt but if the cost is too high I'll just go with a set of new ones. Thanks guys.

Re: Aluminum heads for L98?

What's your budget? Many aftermarket heads are very good. Don't get wrapped up in flow numbers, they don't tell the story, there's a lot more to it.

How much power are you looking to make? The L98 heads as they are good without modification to over 350 HP but fall flat after 400.

You can have the L98 heads ported for about $1200 or you can get a set of American made and cast aftermarket for just a little less.

First thing you need to decide is what HP numbers you can really can get given the rest of the combination, then decide on what you want to do with your heads.

A lot of times heads are not the best place to throw money as the FIRST thing you do. Typically it's second or third.

Re: Aluminum heads for L98?

AFR 195 Eliminators have perimeter and center bolt. Best street head out there IMO.

Re: Aluminum heads for L98?

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping to keep it under a grand (Married.) I added my specs to my sig, hope it worked. AFR's are very nice but exspensive, I was looking at Proform and Patriot but can't find all the features I want.

Sig didn't work, anyone know how to turn it on?

Tell you what, I have a deal with profiler. I can get them for you for just about a grand, I'll check the price. I don't typically sell heads as a rule, but I have some connections and can save you a couple bucks.

They are an excellent head. Bob Lutz is running 6.X at 220 and better using their products.

Otherwise, you can do Vortec.

Hey Brother, Thanks. Who is Profiler? I don't think I have to worry about my IROC running in the 6's! Still working on the sig.

www.profilerperformance.com

They are a great product, 100% made in America.

Check out their site and who is using them. Some hard core drag racers using their stuff.

Those heads are nice. Decently priced too. Can you get them with the EGR passage?

The EGR comes off the exhaust manifold, I'm not so sure what you're talking about.

Re: Aluminum heads for L98?

What color is the "buy AFR kool-aid" so I know not to drink it?

He wants heads that "flow a little better then alum L98's". There are a LOT of heads between here and there.

If you intend to build a car up and intend to make a project out of it I think it should start with the heads. Build everything around the heads. But if you are looking for a "hit" of some speed headers, exhaust can give you that if they are a restriction.

For Aluminum heads around your budget think the Patriot Freedom series are 185cc-225cc and $800-$1000. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PAR-2169/

Another budget aluminum head is Procomp http://www.jegs.com/p/Procomp-Electr...57641/10002/-1

Pro comp and a couple others have Aluminum Vortec 185cc style heads that don't require Vortec intake.

He's talking about the center exhaust ports if I'm not mistaken. They need the EGR provisions (a hole leading to it in the back of the center exhaust bowls) to use the right EGR valve.

Here's a picture of what the ports look like on a GM SBC head. The aftermarket guys handled it MUCH better.

Re: Aluminum heads for L98?

Why are people suggesting aluminum heads without asking what else he is doing? If he's not replacing pistons or doing something else to raise the compression, the additional heat loss from aluminum vs cast iron is going to wipe out any gains.

If this is what your looking for, then no, those ports are not on these heads.

Honestly, this is the first I've heard of it, I learn something new every day....

His original question was, does any aftermarket heads have center bolt. AFR does. If your going to spend $1000ish anyway, makes sense to pay an extra $250-$300 to get a better head. 195 eliminators have much better mid lift flow, probably worth 20-30hp on a 400hp engine.Plus they will support more total hp.

The profilers are just as good as anything out there, and $300 cheaper. I'd go that way. He gives up nothing that way and has $300 in his pocket. 100% American made and they own their own foundry, right out there in Ohio. Hard to beat that.
