What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

I have an 86 Z that I'm fixing. The air intake duct that goes from the air filters to the MAF was duct taped to the MAF. What is the correct way it is supposed to be attached? Could someone post pics or tell me what I need or where to get it? Thanks

Hello timonator!!

Go to your local NAPA etc.....they may carry a correct replacement attachment band for your MAF, if they don't have it, try the dealer!!

I used a 3" hose clamp on mine.

Ok, i don't understand how a hose clamp would work. The intake is hard plasic so it won't squeeze tight around the MAF to form a seal, I think it needs something to pull it tight to the MAF.

Hello timonator!!

You have two choices, one is the honest way, two is the dishonest way!!

Choice # 1: Do you need a spare MAF????? You could by a new replacement MAF with the new replacement band clamp, and then you'd have a spare MAF, and your very own new reusable band clamp!!!

Choice #2: By a new replacement MAF, take it home, use the new replacement band, and then return it saying it was missing a piece/the car doesn't need it.......etc!!!

There is an alternate choice, look for one in the junk yard, usually when you remove it, it will not be able to be put back together (one time use), however, you could then use a 3 inch hose clamp, to clamp the broken one!!

The plastic has enough give that the clamp will tighten up on it. Drove mine like that for 2 years had no problem with it.

I made the mistake of taking mine all apart. Dang thing was a PITA to put back on. Took a couple pairs of pliers, a screwdriver, and a couple extra hands.

Re: What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

While it technically is a vaccuum leak, any air that gets sucked in through that seam is going to go through the maf anyway so it won't set a code. The only concern that I had was that it is unfiltered air going to the maf. So I used a 3" hose clamp to tighten the seam.

Re: What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

I'm not really sure where you'd get one, but there are replacement clamps available... most new MAFs come with them. It's similar to the factory retainer in that it's got curved sides designed to keep the two pieces held together, but instead of the goofy locking mechanism of the stock unit, it's got a more conventional looking hose-clamp type of tightener. If they're coming with MAFs, then somebody is making them for some purpose, and my guess is that it isn't ONLY for that purpose or they wouldn't bother giving it to you. It might take some work, but they're out there somewhere.

If you run out of luck, hit up a junk yard or Hawks or one of those places for an OEM one. You can use a slotted screwdriver to loosen the crimp, install it, then use dykes or snip-style pliers to re-tighten the crimp.

Hey there,

I am curious if a coupler would work somehow, or be made to work, as they are used in air ducts quite a bit.

Re: What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

just use the hose clamp it doesnt really matter if that connection is airtight as the air will still be metered by the maf. If your really concerned about a good seal run a bead of silicone around it. I've never seen a crimped one that had a perfect seal on it ever.

Re: What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

I put an O-Ring the size of the MAF around it and jammed it in the the duct tightly and used soap and water to check for leaks

Re: What holds the air cleaner duct to the MAF ?

The MAF should have an o-ring, so when coupled with the right clamp, it should be air tight.
