Help me TPI a 1982 Corvette! CONVERSION THREAD

My friend has a 1982 corvette (5.7L) with the original crossfire injection.

He wanted to ditch it and install a carb. I am familiar with TPI well enough that I offered to help him go with a TPI system INSTEAD, But I have a question before I can add it up effectively.

If I buy a MAF tpi system for a 1987 305 engine,
what injectors / ECU will I need to use instead? I dont think the 305 computer will work with any 350 even with the right injectors?
also is the bolt pattern for the intake correct? I dont remember what year it switched.
Anything besides the ECU / Injectors I should be aware of?

The '165 MAF computer ( '86-'89 Vette and F-Bodies ) are all the same. The difference is in the tune ( programming ) on the memcal (chip )
Will work on 305 or 350 with correct programming.Need 350 injectors

Re: Help me TPI a 1982 Corvette! CONVERSION THREAD

I would like to use a 92 speed density computer / tpi system on my 82 corvette.

Looks like I need to re-drill the intake manifold.
looks like I need injectors and the right EEPROM for the 350 engine.
I wonder where I will store the computer in the car?

The TPI harness is not going to just DROP IN. I wonder what sort of wiring awaits?

It says "Earlier cross fire large electronic distributors can be used on tunedports" I wonder how the wiring is done to keep the original crossfire distributor?

many questions, many thanks!

A bit of work involved in reworking factory harnesses for non stock apps
May be easier ( less painfull ) to get a aftermarket retro fit engine harness to suit the computer of your choice. Aftermarket harness has one wire for 12V, one for key on and a ground ; stock has multiple wires that need to be connected correctly

Highly likely the computer controlled HEI dist on the CFI engine is the same as that used on the TPI 's

any idea who would have such a thing? You mean like a painless patch harness for 92 TPI -> 82 vette?
I will look around...

I found a few but they are $300-$420

Whats cheaper, paying $150 for a chip or buying the software/chip burning hardware and doing it myself?

Re: Help me TPI a 1982 Corvette! CONVERSION THREAD

If I use an old TPI system 1986~ there wont be any VATS so a custom chip wont be necessary right? BUt then again, there will be a cold start injector... and a maf sensor to deal with.

But a maf would be easier to dial in. Maybe i could get a 1985 intake manifold and a 1986-88 tpi harness / computer for a 350. No vats, no custom chips, just wire it up and go...

do you think it would be better to buy a CORVETTE TPI system, or a simple camaro/firebird TPI system for this 82 vette...

You won't find such.
What you will find is a standalone harness to run the engine only using '165 or '730 SD computer .Any other items in car use the stock wiring.
On eBay at present , standalone '730 SD harness $200 / '165 MAF harness $290 ( more expensive because more relays )
You can use any year TPI intake. What determines how it works is the computer you use.You could run MAF on a SD intake ; you could run SD on a MAF intake.
Advantage of tuning yourself or a custom tune is you can change factory setting; different fan temps , different convertor lockup ,allow for removal of cold start injector etc

Re: Help me TPI a 1982 Corvette! CONVERSION THREAD

Apparently I need a MEMCAL ($200) and a burnt chip ($100) to use this 730 ECU in the 1982 corvette does this sound right?

A throttle cable $35, and possibly a TV cable...
The CFire distributor might work,
re-worked harness is about $250
complete Tpi system is about $400-$500
new injectors are $150-$200
custom plumbing / air filter $80~
fuel lines / fuel pump $150~
gaskets / misc $60
O2 sensor bung / welding $50
memcal & burnt chip $300

over $1400 already I might just go carb

just find you a tpi set up for a 90-92 350 complete with harness and ecm,get a painless stand alone harness,a use small cap distributor, a fuel pump and a burt chip..drill the intake to match your heads, get o2 sensor bung welded in..put your ecm under your dash or seat,,run you wires as they did with the old Cf..

LOL!!! sorry...you should be able to find the tpi cheaper than that..and the ecm should come with the chip..airfilter can go right on the throttlebody...why new injectors?? test the stock ones(ohms)if they test out ok than clean the tips with carb cleaner..they are good for something like 400 horses..what kind of fuel pump would you use...

You are right, I was just overestimating to be safe. The injectors are because I want to be done the first time, it just feels like a safe way, of course its not the CHEAPEST way i suppose i can inform the owner of the vehicle that there are cheaper ways such as using oem injectors and possibly needing to extend the trial-and-error period of the tpi intake once its running. If he doesnt care about potential problems, this is an option, I will try to secure the oem injectors with the TPI.

I found someone with a chip that supposedly "drops in" without a memcal does this make sense? its $189 still cheaper than $300

thank you very much, i realize classifieds are necessary for me to search but I have not gotten past ebay just yet, really i was overestimating to be safe and quick if necessary. if I am going to indebt myself to do this then my friend (the owner) needs to know the possible highest cost scenario of piecing this project together. its just to be safe,

lets say $800-$1400 as a possible price prediction, I would not expect it to be much higher or lower than that. I am thinking the pre-wired harness for $250 is a good investment in this situation since it would save me from reading pinouts, i really dont have time to mess with wiring.

He is probably going to go carb in the end though.
he needs the car running asap and a carb can slap on in just a day.
I wonder if the crossfire intake is worth $$$ hes going to ditch it can it sell?
