Okay, I give up. Somebody help me.

Well, for those of you who lurk the forum and read every post haha you 'might' remember I just tore the entire top end off my 91 GTA. However after its maiden voyage to the barber shop and back the battery went dead. No big deal really. Charged it, and now after a lot of trying to start I have determined, it wont.

To be exact its not that it doesnt start, it just wont start 3 out of 4 trys. And when it does it will only run for a second then die. Then on the times it chooses to run for more than 2-3 seconds and I touch the gas, it dies, otherwise it would just die at the 5 second mark anyway.

Now the indicators I have are: The fuel pump keeps priming and is pretty new (under 7k miles), so im doubting that to be a problem. I just cleaned out the injectors on tear down, so I know they are not plugged. Spark plugs are new. Timing is right on 6 degrees initial. All intake manifold work was done "right" and all bolts were torqued to speq and in order, so I dont think its a vacuum issue.

I mean really what the heck?

So this weekend I tried to start it again and I unplugged the MAP sensor hoping that would solve the issue...NOPE! Started...chugged...died.

So! Then I went into search on the forum here and came up with...ECM or ignition module. Who here can verify that? And if so, let me know the best way to test. I have a very basic multimeter and a fair amount of tools.

This might me a long shot, but I was having issues with my car in the summer. Someone told me that it might be the alternator. I went to a local shop and they tested it out, sure enough there was tons of static on the charge, with the battery disconnected it would cause the car to do all sorts of funny things. when the battery was connected it acted like a filter. Before you go and tear into the dizzy and ecm get that thing tested. It might give a dirty signal to the ecm which is causing all sorts of other issues. Also check grounds and make sure that they are clean/attached as you might have missed one when putting it back together.

What exactly is the car doing, does it just crank over and never kicks/starts? look into the coil and see if it is getting a signal from the module. Rule of thumb always start with the easiest thing.

I agree, before you go throwing money into it check the basics, do you have spark, plugs wet or dry? Do you have Fuel? Check all the connections and grounds. Why'd the battery go dead? Bad alternator? Weak battery? Most of the big chains like autozone will test them for free. I've made the mistake of overlooking something I thought I'd already fixed. Don't forget parts go bad, even brand new parts...

Thanks guys im gonna pull the plugs and check for spark this Sunday. Too bad I have Barracks Duty all day Saturday otherwise I could get this done sooner.

I will second the idea that it could be a grounding/charging issue. My Formula was doing all sorts of crazy symptoms including hunting idle, hard-starts and nearly dying upon deacceleration. Turns out a ground wire had broke free...

Well no crap. I checked the grounds and one was jacked. I did my best to fix the issue and the car started up! ...and then through code 33. So currently I unhooked the battery and im letting it clear out, and I will restart it and see if the code comes back, seeing as it was a grounding issue. BTW thanks again for the help fellas.
