Looking at an 86 Trans Am
Well me and my dad test drove an 86 white Trans Am with the 305 TPI motor, and there asking 4 grand for the car with t-tops and 95k miles on it. i think the price is kinda high, but the things i would like to ask from some peoples expierence. The car has been sitting for a little bit, but cranks up really good and drives down the road really smooth, but when i first started it up, it shakes around 100 degrees or under. when it gets to normal temp it smooths out and the ac works good on it, but when you step on the gas the engine shutters bad jus in park, when you drive it doesnt shutter at all, and also it doesnt even rev up until like i get my foot off the gas. Seems like theres a misfire someplace. And the check engine light is on, and the guy said the car needs a whole tune up. But when warmed up and driving the car is fine, it jus feels like theres a mis and its not running like it should, when i was driving and tryed getting on it on the highway it wouldnt do ****, or downshift at all i felt like i nearly had the pedal to the floor board almost. This is the only car around thats a third gen for sale near me literally, and i like it, and want to try getting a new idle air control value and give it a tune up, spark plug wires, spark plugs the usual etc...... One other question is..... whats the normal idle speed on the tuned port motor? this car idles at 500 and like 650 in park. Is that normal, because on cold starts it jumps around at 500 a lot until warm up.
The guy has the computer coder when he can scan for codes, but he said he is not sure where it is to scan for on this car. Anyone know so i could possibly get my friend to do it. hopefully by monday i can get get pics of the car up because if it goes well with insurance i might be getting it. Its just things i wanted to ask, because i do want to fix it up a lil bit and get it running right instead of jus sitting forever.
Also the left headlight wont go up? It seems like it trys to but im guessing the motor or something is weak on it. the right one pops right up.

Re: Looking at an 86 Trans Am
you can find better thirdgens to buy for 4 grand. i paid 750 for my 86 trans am with a 305 tpi motor. body didnt have a lot of rust interior was messy and alil water damaged paint was a little faded in spots
engien acted just like you described until i put some work into the engine replaced a few key components and gave it a reall good tune up
but car ran and had 100,000 miles on it
i just think you can do better, thats just my opinion

I heard 86 was not a good year. But if your going to spend that kind of money take it to a mechanic and fork out the 50$ to have it checked out first. And keep in mind ,, lots of really nice 3rd gens for around 3-4k. Good luck dude.

You can find something alot nicer with no problems for around $3k and have it shipped for under $1K. Or if mechanically inclined then get one with a good body but needs mech work for around $1000 to $1500 and build the motor the way you want it.

i respect your opinions and views, and it made me think. Im guessing the only reason they want to car for a price like that is because much of the newer vehicles they sell these days are like 03s and 05 with over 100k on them already, and they saw a value in the car for being over 20 yrs old and with 95k and the interior being nearly perfect accept the headliner was a lil saggy. It has t-tops that dont leak, and no rust on the body of the car, the only things it needs is a tune up im guessing and the drivers side headlight motor needs to be replaced since it wont go up. the engine looks fine, and i mean the car was in connecticut all its life with 2 owners, and wasnt driven much, and it found its way to florida. idk when it comes down to it ill see if i can atleast work a deal out at $3500 or lower. idk i mean i could be making mistake, but hey, i dont mind throwing my money into the car that it needs. I mean if its like the transmission or something im like f that, or something really big. It jus needs a tune up and the guy selling the car said if he can figure it out, he will scan for codes. but over all when i drove it, it got good gas milage, well hell better than my silverado at the very least.
I never wanted an 86 because the tpi was detuned to 190, but i think in time u can jus up tune the motor and get it to as good in 200-275 hp category.
