Dented Runners ? Why ?

Why are there so many cars with dented runners? How would this happen? I have had my car for 15 years and nothing remotely close to denting these has happened. The only thing i could think of is while working on the car this happened, but to so many people. Any enlightenment would help.

Every remove the plenum and runners? One dropped tool or careless moment and you have a nice dent.

i would think that when taking these pieces off that some care would be taken. it just seams to happen to a lot of cars.

These cars aren't exactly made of gold, alot of working on these are:
1. kids
2. first time mechanics
3. people that realize the parts can be replaced for $5

Mine aren't dented, but soft aluminum isn't very hard to dent.

I realise that alum. is soft, i am a machinist i work with alum. every day. but the runners would have to be tossed around without a care in the world to be dented like some i've seen. Also these are not that cheap to replace. I will agree that not all would be as carefull as me or you. but these are the same people looking to buy steel ***** to knock out the dents, that are that careless in the first place.

It doesnt take much to dent them. I was removing a clamp, screwdriver slipped off, moved to exactly the wrong place... and next thing you know I have a sqaure shaped crease from the shaft of the screwdriver on one of the runners. I barely hit the thing. Friend of mine dropped a deepwell socket on one from maybe a foot above the intake and dented a runner. They are flimsy as hell.

Exactly. Not everyone realizes how easily they are damaged, and sometimes accidents happen. I've had hammers and other heavy tools get bumped off of benches.

theres a nice little ding in one of my runners, which is kind of a pain because i want to get to get alot of parts all nice and cleaned up and polished, but i dont really want to buy another runner to polish and i dont want to polish a dented runner.
