Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
Any thoughts on the newer performance (6.1L, 5.7L)mopars out compared to GTA's and Iroc's.
Does the weight to power ratio balance out or would they even own a 3rd gen with some bolt on mods?

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
I raced one at Cayuga last Friday.
Hemi version fitted with either Nittos or drag radials (couldn't tell).
He ran a 14.3.
However I think it's safe to say that he was probably running in stock trim and there's lots left in the tuning/upgrade department. Not to mention a fully equipped vehicle with all the creature comforts. Is there a second and a half left to squeeze out...? It would probably require a cam upgrade and associated tuning. Then it could run 12's.
My IROC on the other hand is pretty much an antique compared to the Challenger. Quicker but not half the car.

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
Considering the power they have stock 14.3 isnt bad, Im sure with 6.1 they would dip into 13s.
Then again its not a fair comparision unless you compare to an LS TA, Camaro.
Im sure we could give a good go with a mild setup in a 3rd gen.

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
The way my 5.7L 300 is setup it should pull high 13's after I tweak the tune a little. There are 6.1L guys running low 11's. www.lxforums.com has lots of info on these cars. My 300c kills my old thirdgen in power and comfort.

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
I see the lots of the new Mopars at the track every friday night for T&T
most of them are slowish in factory trim. 14s and 15s are common. I think they expect to get 12s and are crest fallen to post a 15.1 (haha). Just the effect of trying to move 4500 lbs down the track even if it has a hemi.
some of them are very fast after the owners added lots of money (like any other car). have not seen any 12s but alot of low/mid/high 13s.
seems to often boil down to the driver and how practiced they are with the car. They pull awful slalom times even in R/T trim. Saw one guy rip his 255/35/20 right off the rim in a dip pulling max G. Lucky not to roll over.
I respect the Mopars but they weigh in same as my STS and it is a boat

I test drove a 5.7 Charger and that thing is pretty quick stock. Probably takes my 3rd gen in 1/4 mile race. I was shocked how fast it was cause I heard on here they were pretty slow.

I seen lots of the 6.1's in the 12's at the track, one guy swore he was bone stock and was running 12.8's pretty much all night, only 5.7 I have seen ran high 13's but I dont know what was done to it. Frig the little SRT4 Calibers run high 13's stock, lined a guy at the track a few times, couldnt beleive how fast that thing was stock for a little Caliber.
I own a 08 300C (stock) and it would blow the doors off any of the stock 3rd gen's I have owned and I have owned alot including some 350 TPI car's, but I have not tracked it yet, I am thinknig low 14's off the butt dyno, its about as fast as our stock 96 Z28 6-Speed was, so not too bad for a big heavy 4 door family car
Hell our Turbo PT abuser would give any stock non TPI 3rd gen a run for its $, 3rd gen's are old tech and just not that fast in stock trim anymore, but as I always said, its easier to make a 3rd gen fast then a 4th gen look good

hey put 50 or 60 grand (the cost of a new Challenger) into your 3rd gen and see how fast it can go.....your not comparing apples to apples

He asked ""Any thoughts on the newer performance (6.1L, 5.7L)mopars out compared to GTA's and Iroc's"", he didnt ask for a price comparison to the performance
Sure u can buy a 3rd gen for less then a Chalanger and make it go faster with the remaining cash, hell u can make the 3rd gen go faster then a Viper for the remaining cash let alone a Chalenger, but that isnt what he asked

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
sadly 3rd gens are getting "slow". since i got my iroc, i have given hard once on that engine. got a interesting impression: its a quick car, but not fast. ppl say its not worth moding a 305, but someone made me see that 305 has some potential. special when u know the downs of a tpi system.
hawk, im curious about the "412":P any pictures avaible?

Actualy your the one trying to compair apples to apples, for starters my 3rd gen's are faster then the chalangers and it cost alot less then 50 - 60 grand to do it

Don't think Hawk was at the fall show. He doesn't like to come down from up North much. Easy drive to his house though.....AND he has a Timmy's near by

My mods, Catback exhaust, K&N short ram intake, mild tune.
My 5.7 pulled a 13.8 @ 102mph a couple of weeks ago.
I went with the ccfbg guys and the were very surprised. There is still a another little bit in it with some tuning adjustments.

Re: Chargers Challengers vs 3rd gens
Yes Bill, a close Timmy's is good
Started with a 305 in that car, went to a 350, then a 383 and now the 412.
Its cheaper to build a 406 then a 383 if u have to get the blocks anyway's, 383 is only cheaper if u already have the 350 block. As the extra cost for the 383 over the 406 is in the clearencing of the block for the larger stroke, a stroke that the 400 uses stock (3.750), might as well get the extra cubic inches if u got the choice in my opinion Both are SBC's so they bolt right in, biggest trouble I had was finding the 2-piece flywheel for the T-56.
Anyway's I dont want to steal this guy's thread anymore and I dont have to many updated pic's, I'll PM you what I got. If your on the CCFBG forum already do a seach, somewere on there is the old build thread of when the 412 was going in, i dont think I deleted it, I am a moderator over there
I havent seen any of the SRT8's in the 11's yet when I have gone, but give them time and I am sure there will be a few
For playing, I like the 3rd gen the best, but for daily use I find the 300C uber comphy, with lots of room and gobs of power for a boat
The camaro looks small beside it
