Anyone see the news?? This hobby is taking a beating

It seems that our government is taking a HARD approach towards street racing and drunk drivers. The harshest laws in Canada in Ontario.
Drunk drivers, yes, by all means, take them down. Make repeat offenders lose their licenses for life.
But street racing? Ouch. I really DO NOT believe it's a big a problem as they make it out to be here in Ontario. On the news they showed 2 wreaked cars that had been racing. 2 everyday fwd plain old cars. Nothing special. Street racing? I think 2 teenagers not knowing how to drive being stupid in Mom/Dad's car is more like it. The media is a big part of the problem. Pumping up their readers/viewers into thinking it's total destuction and mayhem on the streets. Last summer (I think) in Toronto the two rich kids that crashed, killing someone I recall. Stupid, yes. But the media made a point in the fact a racing VIDEO game was on the passenger seat of one of the cars, so they were STREET RACERS!!!!!! I had no idea everyone had memberships in a sreet racing club. I haven't got a member's card.
I'm not making light of people getting hurt or killed bacause of these actions, I feel for the families of innocents. But whatever happened to people that are just being stupid. A "street racer" gets more bad publicity than a rapist. That is fu*king crazy. There are bigger, more serious problems out there where people are hurt/killed that could use the attention.
Add this to the incoming "green" attitude for our future, and you have to wonder if the "atuo hobby" is trying to be phased out. The new attitude of "gas guzzling engines pollute more, so you should pay more because your car burns more"???? Ummm, that's getting a bit much. It's like the twist ties for each household for garbage day program, but implimented for cars.
I see myself on a 60 kph governed moped in the future.lol

Yeah, I agree; it's total BS.

They seem to be gearing up against people who drive larger vehicles - gonna try and make them into criminals.

Although I think pickup trucks will be exempt from the new tax which is fine with me because I'd rather have a truck for a daily anyway and if I have to pay more for fuel then I will because it's money well spent if some tree hugging, cellphone yapping POS blows a red light and piles into me.

gotta disagree

street racing is nothing but a pi$$ing contest. public roads are, by definition, a public place, and not a place for competition. if somebody wants to prove their car is faster, or they're a better driver, take it to the track! pass a tech inspection, get a timeslip. case closed.

it seems like you're saying that it's bad for some drunk to risk not only their own safety but also that of the public by operating a motor vehicle in an impaired state, but it's ok for somebody to risk that same safety by racing on public streets? that doesn't make sense to me. unsafe driving is unsafe driving. if you're focusing on the f@ktard you're trying to beat, you're not focusing on the countless other things that demand your attention when you're operating a motor vehicle on public roads. add to this the fact that when you street race, you're helping give the public the impression that anybody who enjoys working on their car is out to race it on the street, and i for one resent being painted with that brush.

there are lots of venues to explore the limits and abilities of both your car and your driving abilities, from autox to dragstrip test and tune days. at events like these you can concentrate on the task at hand without worrying about somebody crossing the road, the lights changing, trains, or other traffic. and you can probably improve your driving skills to boot.

i'm not even going to touch the green thing, cuz if that's the way you're looking at it there's not much i'm going to say that will convince you either way. if you're just talking about the new vehicle tax thing, that's a poorly thought out, poorly implimented, conservative election tactic and nothing else.

Re: Anyone see the news?? This hobby is taking a beating

I am NOT saying it's ok to race on the street. Not at all. But I will say, like you stated, my feelings are that ANYONE with a nice (or performance) car will be labeled a bit of a threat to the roads. Not because of who they are, but because of what the mainstream is labeling. Don't tell me a cop pulling a musclecar over with a loud exhaust note isn't frowning thinking "speed" at the top of his thoughts. How many times have you (or a friend) been followed for some miles by a cop? I've often wondered, "Is he actually waiting for me to do something crazy or do a smokeshow or something? I see him behind me."
The green thing I was kind of thinking about is also the proposal that (I think) London has. Extra tax for higher fuel users. That is BS. If you buy more fuel, you pay for it. Simple as that. Make someone pay even more? Who decides the max before an extra $ kicks in?
I'm a tad tired here, and just rambling and venting abit about our government.
While I'm ranting on my soapbox, lets bring in capital punishment and empty our jails out a bit.
Send all rapists, child molesters, and the lot to the gallows.

Re: Anyone see the news?? This hobby is taking a beating

This is Ontario- and for anyone who hasn't noticed yet- for the last 10 years every citizen/resident of the province is viewed as a potential criminal and/or a potential extraneous revenue source- whether it be for "street racing", drinking and driving, riding a bicycle without a helmet, whatever. We're about 2 steps away from needing a license to paddle a canoe or be fined $200 a pop.

Why? Government and the media. Government likes anything that will generate revenue- and by criminalizing things, or raising the level of criminality of a given activity, or forcing testing and licensing of different sorts- they will collect their fees and fines. The media has to continually either "discover" news, or more realistically- promote the crap out of events that are essentially meaningless, or are "old news" in the big picture. In the US the media is even worse- nearly every nightly newscast leads off with a statement of how the 'sky is falling'- and after people sitting for 20 minutes to find out why- the message is 99% guaranteed to be something everybody already knows and understands like cancer statistics, or a story on the lack of smoke detectors in homes, etc. etc.

Yeah, it becomes a touchy area. How do you prove you weren't racing if you weren't. Anyway you slice it, it's gonna cost you. Just owning a nice car may have an addmission fee.
And I've always kinda wondered, seeing as how Canada is always giving BILLIONS and TRILLIONS of $$$$$$$$$$$ to EVERYONE on the planet, why do we have a national defecit? Who do we exactly owe money to as a country? Doesn't like every nation of earth owe us money by now? Can't we call in a few payments there to pay that bi*ch off?
Then "theoretically" we could lower taxes. Or keep them the same, and pump the hell out of essential services like healthcare and such.

i agree with this statement, my wife just spent a day in the hospital giving birth to our second child, and i noticed a big difference from when we had or last one 2 years ago. The staff of the hospital was great, just things that they use to supply they no longer can, because it has been cut from the budget. I was talking to a couple of the nurses about this and they were quite bitter because they felt they are no longer giving a decent level of health care.

AS for the street racing law, this is just a way for the government to get re-elected, why do you think they released all of this information at this time.

I agree 100%. Pretty soon they will likely start imposing additional taxes on cars that are black or red because they are perceived by MADD to be more sporty. Before you know it the government will have us all driving hybrid powered champaigne coloured mini vans. Communism FTL.

Re: Anyone see the news?? This hobby is taking a beating

I will first state, once again, but I really want to get this across - I am NOT making light of injuries/fatalities due to street racing or the like. I feel it is a tragedy for any death or lifechanging injury to occure. I feel for the families.
Now for my other statement. The paper today stated 35 deaths have occurred since 1999 due to streetracing.
I'm not making a joke of this, but I think more deaths have been caused due to people asleep at the wheel in the same timespan. And that is something EVERYONE has done at a time or another - drive while exhausted, just trying to get home. Maybe make a bigger campaign to educate for this problem.
Like some say, election time.

TGO's goin political !? Well all I have to say is that about 70% of the population doesn't understand the car hobby (read : the feeling of driving a real bitchin , badass car ...) . Theyre rushin down the road after theyre boring , stressing job in theyre focus , echo or wathever , listening american idol tracks and they see you enjoying the road in ur Firebird , Mustang or Camaro and automaticly think youre non headed young street racer ... Maybe it's a part of the car guy job ?

Re: Anyone see the news?? This hobby is taking a beating

Personally, I've been to street races. Just a common thing growing up in this day and age. I didn't participate but watched. If these media groups or paper people were to come out and actually research what they are bashing, they would come to realize that the real "racers" that take pride in their cars, TAKE the time to make sure things are "safe" for what they are doing. Sure racing the car at high speeds is the dangerous part but in no way is it during the day, around school zones, in populated areas and if anyone is there to watch, they're not running in the streets or being idiots off to the side. It's quite organized to be honest. And if anyone is out of line or being an idiot, they are told to leave. Straight up, lol.

It pisses me off to no end with the media making everything seem like the end of the world. It's so annoying that we have pencil pushing retards behind the paper and news that you know were picked on as kids and are just taking it out on us.

That's my rant. Regardless of what happens, racers will always find a way to do what they do. You take away the streets, they'll find a new area. Threaten them with losing their cars and they'll just hide it better. Government is going about this the wrong way. If they want to take the racing to the tracks, they need to build one. Think of the jobs it would make. More businesses would open around such an event. Lives would be saved from idiot kids taking mom and pops cars out and mashing the pedal thinking they're Vin Diesel. My 2 cents anyway.

It can all be traced back to the liberalism of Canada. They give boatloads of cash to other causes yet our roads lack MAJOR maintenance. Welfare ,health leeches have doubled , false refugee claims. The list goes on and on. It all adds up to a big ZERO. So they look for new ways to make up for that.
