Ontario gas crisis 2007!

Guys, I'm not sure where to post this question so I thought, hey I'll put it here and see if it gets moved. lol My town keeps running out of gas with the current shortage that's going on and I thought to myself (mainly because no one else will listen... lol) what would happen if when I brought my camaro out and the shortage was still going on? I thought geez, I better think of some ways to make my car more fuel efficient! So what do you guys think about maybe taking out two spark plugs (or more if need be) and replacing them with some bolts?? No spark means no power, and no power means slow right? And slow means less gas right? If you guys have any other great ideas like this, post them will ya so that we can help other Ontarians in this time of great need.

Best idea I've heard for some time..lol

I'd suggest removing four o/wise it will run a bit rough. You may have to mess with the firing order too but I expect someone can help you with that on one of the tech forums.

I think we need to start looking for a new provincial gov't that can acutally do things properly. One refinery has problems and all the companies jack up their proces to take even more money from us...f-em I'm buying a diesel.

That ain't going to help you lol, all the diesel is going to the trucking companies while they'er running out too.
But I also think it's pretty much fraud what is happening to the consumers. The oil industry just keeps coming up with reasons to raise the prices every couple months don't they. It's ok though really, I heard the oil companies need the money, they'er hurting bad. I don't feel bad paying high prices at the pumps when I know it's going to a cause that needs it more.

Removing sparkplugs/their ability to fire will cause you nothing but grief.

The newest vehicles on the road with MDS (multiple displacement...) can do so because they are direct-inject fuel injection, the ECM has the programmed ability to turn off both injectors and spark going to whatever cylinders it feels like controlling in order to keep the engine running reasonably well.

Even if you have direct injection (ie. TPI) on your car- Chevy SB's running on less than 8 cylinders run like dogs. Ever drive a carbed vehicle when a cylinder stop firing? Unless the power output on the engine is so significant before doing this you can't notice it (i.e. 300+ ft/lbs/HP)- it always cause extremely poor running. Just for fun- go out and pull a plug wire off whatever car you normally drive and see how it operates.

Now- if you have a carb on you vehicle- not only will it run like crap- but you'll still be using the same amount (maybe more) fuel- vacuum is what draws the A/F mixture down the carb and into the cylinders. As the valves will still be opening- fuel/air will still be drawn into the cylinder- but not burnt- and exiting out the tailpipe (badly) quite possibly causing backfires and flooding your crankcase with gasoline.

Just not a good idea unless you engine setup was designed for this from the get-go.

You want to save gas- keep your foot off the pedal a bit.

You want to "solve the real problem," call up the "big oil boys" and tell them to re-construct some of the dozens of refineries they demolished in the '60s, or maybe route some of the gas being sent to the US to domestic pumps (yes, raw gasoline can be, and is, sent through pipelines along with crude, LPG and anything else they'd like to cram in there). This is all just a scam to yank pricing as the price of crude goes down. Reminds me of the DRAM factory in Taiwan that burnt down in 1993 causing the price of computer memory to double overnight. Every year- right about the time of the "anniversary" of this event, DRAM manufacturers have "problems" and spike the price of DRAM from June to September. Coincidence- of course not.

Another idea I was trying to work out would be to place my car on top of a Blaser/Jimmy frame and shove some huge monster tires under it. Now I'm thinking huge monster tires means more ground coverage in one rotation then my little 245's. So lets say that one rotation of huge monster tires travelled is twice as far as my small tires, so that would mean twice as less gas consumed right? lol

This idea would work if you could disable the plugs AND the injectors... AND make the ECM like it. If you were using stand alone engine management I suspect this could be done quite easily.

Please Eric2ndGen this is a very serious situation we have going on here and the people in Ontario are in great termoil. We dont need jokes like

"Just not a good idea unless you engine setup was designed for this from the get-go.
You want to save gas- keep your foot off the pedal a bit."

We need serious ideas like:

"taking out two spark plugs (or more if need be) and replacing them with some bolts??"
or
"Could just duck tape a Smart car to the back of the Camaro and use it to push the car around!!"

Unless your going to be helpful please start your own thread called "funny ideas that will help nobody" lol

Maybe I should shut down one of my eight generators that I have running to power my 13" black and white tv and my 20watt bulb lamp. You never know when we might have another black out! Of course I only run ultra 94 in my generators ya know.

Thats easy! A pair of side cutters and a couple of snips here and there, and there ya go. A few less plugs and a few less injectors. Put a happy face sticker on the ECM (makes it very likeable) and your off! johnyIROC, you are my hero! lol

Back in the 70's they had a gas crisis as well. A lot of guys jacked up the back of their cars to get better gas mileage...makes the car so it's always going down hill.

Eric isn't wrong in his suggestion. You would be surprised how many people have very poor driving habits that resut in poor fuel economy. In many driver's handbooks, CAA's included, one of the steps that encourage fuel economy is to prevent 'jack rabbit starts' hard acceleration etc.. the gentler you are with your right foot, the better your milage will be.

Convert to propane, you can still switch over to gas if need be. Trucks that run on propane have very clean engines. Besdies its like 49.9 cents per litre.

there is still the balance of the crank and the the exhaust valves will suck in exhaust gas from manifolds

If nos isn't affected by this gas raping, just run it all the time. I hear it burns clean too.

maybe i should get a diesel and run it off cooking oil.

I'm just glad i got a 3.4 and it's not some gas hog engine for these high prices and shortages around here. In windsor it's 1.029.

This is the second best idea I have heard in some time..lol

If you do this and take out 4 plugs it will cost you next to nothing to get around. Only problem is that if everyone did this then the oil companies would lose money and they'd come looking for you because it was your idea..lol

That idea will work, but you really only need those big tires in the back of the car. In the front it will not increase the gas milage any. Another advantage of having it high in the back end is it will most likely fool the computer into thinking the car is going downhill as 6speedIROC tried to explain. And everyone know that a car will get WAY better milage when going downhill

Seems I missed the boar earlier- but that's OK- swimming is bound to save some gas.

I like the bigger rear wheel idea to make a car think its always going downhill- that's brilliant.

Another suggestion might be to cut out your floorpan so you can "ramp up" to speed with your feet a la Fred Flintstone. Would probably work even better if you wear roller skates while doing it.

I say we all have a can of beans for breakfast, and keep the rear hatch open but then we'd all fail the DriveClean.

Re: Ontario gas crisis 2007!

Very cute Jonathan. Get that axle in yet? I'll try to help out here. Before I killed it for a rebuild at 540,000km (original paint), I was running a 355 TBI in a 91 1/2 ton rclb GM truck. It was a rebuild with flat-tops, stock heads and a crappy "RV" single pattern cam (I think lift was .447 intake and exhaust). My mods were 3/4 length headers and true duals, 8mm wires, MSD coil, K&N open element, rebuilt 700R4 with a trans-go kit and stock(1700 rpm or so) converter and a 3:08 gear. I also got an AIR-RAID spacer, which I don't really recommend. I gained about 0.5-1 mpg, but only on the highway...it moved the torque band up, which is the last thing you want for a heavy truck. Before I did any mods, the engine as is was getting about 600 or so to the tank (about 100-110L). After I did the mods, I was getting 800km+ to a tank, on the highway, cruising at 100-120 km/hr. The headers didn't really improve the mileage either, but the duals sure did. So, if you don't already have some of these mods, add them for mileage and power gains...its win-win. I know, we can't run 'duals' without difficulty, but if you're still running a factory GM cat, go scrap it and take the money you get for it and go buy a new high flow one. AND, to keep everything in perspective, just think about how much a liter of bottled water costs compared to a liter of gas. We're getting hosed by the oil companies, I agree, but we can all continue to LIVE without gas...I'd like to see anyone live without WATER. And yes, I'm well aware that I'm no fun whatsoever.

Maybe we should get this name changed to gas crisis 2008. Geez how can gas go from $1.00 to at least $1.20 when they say the price per barrel is cheaper? Oh wait it's summer. Any body have any clue on how many AA batteries it takes to run a camaro? I got six... Of course now my remotes won't work....
