Sleeper gets put to sleep
Some guy was trying to sneak around in a de-badged Trailblazer SS with wide tires. It ain't foolin' me. He cruises past and wouldn't you know the light turns red in front of us on the highway. He rolls down the passenger window so he can hear what I'm doing. That sly fox thinks he's going to pick on a 3rd gen today.
I'm just going to wait and see what he does. Light turns and sure enough, he launches for all he's worth and jumps out a length on me. Well now... we got ourselves a little fun!
The countryside lights up with the howl of my car, telegraphing ahead to him the *** whooping that's about to happen. I walk past him in 1st gear and put a small gap between us while modulating tire spin at about 1/2 throttle. 1st gear is always an exercise in restraint, you know. I'm going about 50 mph and reach for 2nd --- the slingshot gear. He may not have been surprised that I passed him, but I'll bet he was shocked what happened next when I caught traction! I usually don't taunt, but I couldn't resist giving him the bye-bye arm wave at the top of 2nd gear.
Yeah see, you're not the only person with a sleeper.

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
Nice! By looks, your car would pull off the sleeper look, but if his window was down he was probably second guessing his race choice when he could hear your engine just a little better lol. Having a t5 I can safely say I’ll never hit 50mph in first gear lol. Just out of curiosity what rpm is this at?

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
50 mph is about 6500 rpm in 1st gear for me.
I've got the rev limiter set at 7200 rpm right now. I think the practical limit of an LS7 stock bottom end is 7500 rpm. T56 F-body transmission with dual synchros can have troubles shifting above 7000 rpm, I really don't want to temp fate so probably leave things where it is.

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
just about all of those trailblazer ss's around here are cop cars, one must be careful. I don't have your HP but with the 2.73 rear and the t56 its amazing just how fast you can go in 1st and how fast you get there... I'm afraid to do a really hard launch on the 213k mile stock 10 bolt though so I've only done full sends from a rolling start. On a curvy road around 50mph its real happy in 2nd right in the torque curve for pulling turns, 3ed is ok but you have to plan ahead a little more.
Your car was a v6 originally right? too bad you don't have v6 badging all over it

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
Not to distract from your winning, I never looked down too much at speed when racing, just rpm. Recently just raced light to light and was easily at 50s in first gear. Anyways, my own personal research had to correct lol.

No problem! I'm just trying to get more people posting here. This is the most underutilized area of the forum and that's a lot of potential fun missing from this place!

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
Glad to see some of us are still having some fun randomly. Though a lot of people frown apon this forum due to the nature of street racing. But theres a rush of just a quick 1-3rd gear pull next to another gentlemen who is also stretches his legs that makes us all enjoy our cars and the stories it brings.
I used to post a lot more on here yrs ago and sadly as I get older and more responsibilities come up,my time to just cruise around and toy with others has severely come down. But now I always try to carry my gopro in the car whenever I drive it to capture moments like this.
I love the most is the look on someones face when you just suck their doors off from the vortex of giving them the hit and gap..before rushing passed them with a friendly wave bye-bye.

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
There are so many unmarked cars here you cant tell whos who anymore
Some fool @ cruise night comes running through with his Silverado..stock wtih cutouts takes off down the st and an explorer pulls out right behind him, another waiting down the st lights him up.
Not worth it. Roll into it once in awhile but wiht these crazy Ca laws makes ya paranoid. Last car I got impounded was blown up and stripped while in there, nothing you can do.

As the owner and driver of a sleeper myself, I can tell you that this is exactly 100% on point. When you're driving around a car designed to take people by surprise, the last thing you should ever be is Tee'd off that somebody else beat you. The car is supposed to be outwardly humble looking... be like the car. lol

Re: Sleeper gets put to sleep
Never considered the Camaro to be a sleeper. After all it is a Camaro. The cowl hood is discreet though.
But that's exactly how it was described to others by the owner of a Chevelle that I had a little dalliance with some time ago.
Thing is that I don't have the stones I used to have in the days of my youth. I was a Chevelle owner then and would spend many evenings in many towns looking for a stop light Grand Prix.
I gotta my heap back on the road and enjoy it.
It's working.
