My Iroc vs Mazda 6?

I have a '89 Iroc with a 305 tpi. Only mods are gutted airbox, k&ns, taylor wires and a granatelli MAF. A kid that I know has a '06 Mazda 6. It has the inline 4 with a 5 speed. Car made 160hp new. He talks it up so much. And I read somewhere that its 0-60 in 10 seconds, but you can't trust the Internet. Anyone have any ideas on who would win?

A mazda 6 with the 4 cyl? Probably not, but you could still lose. A well running TPI car should still beat a stock 6. Mainly due to the FWD launch, but you won't trap much faster if at all comparatively.

A V6 Mazda 6 would be a loss. And a MazdaSpeed 6? You lose, horribly. Speed 6's tend to run a high 13 second pass around 99-101mph.

A friend of mine has a 99 integra ls and was behind him while he was at WOT and had to press the brakes to avoid hitting him. And I know I could get the Integra

Relax. Thats progress. There are more cars now than those with "Mazda" nameplates for you to worry about. And if cars were getting "slower" as time went by that wouldn't be progress.

Its just a reason to mod the car then.

My Focus would give even a 350TPI a scare. Its making more power at the wheels than some year L98's made at the crank. And its lighter too.

I know that were my GTA still stock I could not abide by that and I'd promptly start modifying the GTA so it was faster than the Focus.

Haha touche. I'm a little too earlier in my career to be affording one of those, however. I can't be the only one who thinks "Damn my car looks awesome. And it sounds vicious. Too bad it's slower than a Taurus."

Sounds like ignorance truly is bliss.

TPI was indeed at the front of the performance revival in the 80s. But Mazda also has a rich racing heritage.

X2

Mazda has made some really fun and fairly fast cars. They in the past and present push technology to bring innovation to the track. Yes they do make econo boxes for some people but that does not mean everything they produce is slow and handles poorly.

i'm betting money on the iroc depending on launch against a 4 cyl mazda. a v6 no way

i can't really compare my car to my 305 tpi becuase it isn't stock and makes over 400hp

Just putting it out there, thats not how gravity works.... they'd both hit the floor at the same time. Just sayin.

Re: My Iroc vs Mazda 6?

My daily driver( 2009 Altima 2.5 4 banger) put 2 car lengths on a 86 LG4 camaro from 20 to 70 mph. Gotta live in fear when driving a 3rd gen around with its original engine......so many cars out there that are faster.

Live in fear? Live in fear that you are driving too awesome of a car? The last gen 1 powered Camaro? A true muscle car, harkening back to the glory days of American Iron? Hahahaha I laugh in the face of fear when I ride my steed, fattened on rice and strengthened by the consumption of horse meat. Fear quakes at its rumble.

Re: My Iroc vs Mazda 6?

Im gonna say if you have a good running TPI car you should pull him no matter what if you do a 20-30 roll. Get him down low where you have the low rpm advantage. 4 cylinder 2.3 powerband isnt until past 5k. Its a drivers race but remember you have the torque advantage and I think the Mazda 6 may be a bit heavier. I get to drive all trim levels of those cars, I personally wouldnt own one, I think theyre garbage. However, I wouldnt waste my gas on a V6 car unless you have gears and some other mods.

Wait, I just saw this.

Your friend isn't putting out 300hp with just a couple of minor bolt ons. He MIGHT be cracking 270 crank. If hes only beating you by a car, theres something wrong with his.

Have your 89 Iroc go against anything Mazda in 89 and see. Lol Times have changed! More power in smaller power plants these days.

You mean except the1989 1.3L Turbo 200hp and 200tq rx7s that ran mid 14s factory?

Or the 160 version that ran low 15s?

Yeah, he was lying about his mods a bit. It has since been to a dyno I believe it was around 250whp

Well that would depend on which one is more aerodynamic and/or heavier so the mazda would win in both categories probably.

Trap Speed > Dyno.

My Focus Dynoed 228whp, and 259lb/ft then ran a 14.3 @ 98mph.

I later tuned said Focus and it dyno'd 231whp, and 299lb/ft, at the drag strip however it only went 14.7 @ 99mph wheel hopping so bad I had to pedal the throttle for fear of breaking something.

Aka the car is MUCH faster now, but I can't put the power down due to marshmallow mounts and lack of a true limited slip diff.

On paper it looks like the tune did NOTHING for power. But in reality I've got a ton more power EVERYWHERE from 2000rpm to 6000rpm.

Re: My Iroc vs Mazda 6?

Years ago I messed up bad and raced a mid-late 90s RX7 twin turbo with an 87 Firebird Formula that had a few mods and ran high 14s. This RX7 gave me the worst beating i ever had! It was an absolute rocket

On Fords tab. They were almost completely bankrupt when Ford bought them years ago.
