Sick of this import racing crap
I know there are a few ricers I wouldn't be able to beat (considering my stock 305 TBI). But I wanna know what I should do. Should I work a lot and sell my car and buy a 4th gen T/A? Or should I just work on my *cry* 305 TBI?

I got one name for ya....NJSpeeder....he has his 305 TBI running 14.2's....go to www.geocities.com/foff667, his car is the '91 RS..have a little chat with him and he'll tell you whats best. But for right now i'd suggest gears, intake and exhaust work. Then when you get more money, stick a lumpy cam and some free flowin heads on it (the heads and cam being the reason for 305 TBI suckiness).

If you really like the looks of your car, just buy a wrecked lt1 car $3000 (should be a nice one), and then pay about 1500 for the swap, and 2000 for mods.... all in all, a very unique and breath takingly fast car! for a lot cheaper than a new trans am.

Get a 350 and build it up. $2000 is alot of money to spend on some real power.
Nothing fancy, but faster that what you have now.
Block
355 rebuild kit
cam
decent heads
used RPM intake
used Holley 650 with vacuum secondaries.

Jack, since your in Michigan like me, you dont have to deal with the smog *****. Why dont you tear out all that computer nonsense and put in a carbureted 305 or 350. You can get one out of a wrecked car for cheap and the swap sholdn't be real hard either. I'll even give you a deal on a low mile 305 HO that has a few mods.

no doubt i totally agree with the above. 4th gens are tight and all, but cumon, they are expensive and a hassle. even 4th geners admit that their engines are a biotch to work on, and they are. they are like back inside the firewall, its hard to explain, if you have seen one you know. not to mention mods are expensive, they are most similar to rice, pricewise, in modding. if you ever look in a rice mag, all of their mods are like $600, and the 4th gen is just the same. ever look at aftermarket hoods for em? as for smog, most 3rd gens are about ready to clear that hurdle, you will have around 20 years til your 01 TA can go smogless. my point is, i have an 82 and smog doesnt apply to me next year, so i am buying a 350 block and doing a $1500 performance rebuild on it and droppin it in the camaro. you should look at a similar, 350 carbed setup if you want cheaper speed that can thrash imports.

Jack,
Ive got a edelbrock catalog that just shows the heads they have..... They have some specifically for a TBI, and they produced 80 lbs/tq and i think 60 HP, That would put you right up with a thirdgen.... while your in the engine just add some aluminum roller rockers, and an LT1 cam....... 170 + 60 + 30 + 30 = 290HP they have 285 mostly.... plust you would have a lot more torque than them..... Does anybody know how much say an 88 Iroc Z is compared to a 92-97 Z28 as far as weight????

Bubba,
Its in edelbrocks new Head catalog. They are call the "New Performer TBI" Designed for 87-95 TBI equipped Big blocks........F*CK it says big blocks... lol..... Well their is another one called the "Performer Centerbolt" aluminum heads for 87-95 with centerbolt valve covers. The High velocity intake runner is designed to work with either TBI or TPI systems. The 60cc combustion chamer maintains the stock compression ratio when used with the reccom. head gasket. Part # 6085
Im guessing that a TBIer with these heads and an LT1 cam would make abound 80HP more and 100 more lbs/tq

i think i am gonna rebuild the motor and throw in a good set of rods and pistons. are those the BEST heads available for the 305tbi? i want something good but i really dont wanna spend more than 1200 bux on heads. do you think its overkill for the 305 or should i just build a 350 and put a carb on it? i have had alot of people say i can pass emissions buy getting my carb adjusted. some say no way. if i can get through emissions with a carbed 350 then i will definatly go that route. i am really not interested in keeping the tbi if i go with a 350. too much BS to deal with. plus, for the price i would pay for heads on the 305 i could dam* near build a 350. wich route should i go? tia.

BUBBA, the heads will bolt on perfectly for a 350 when you decide to go with one.... I do other stuff like upgrade heads, cam, TBI, exhaust, etc... then swap the 350.
