Two 89 L98's battle it out
after racing a few weeks ago at the track together, and him running pretty consistant high 13.6x's at 99-100 to my 13.88 at 98, and after tonights one run of 13.67 at 99 to my 13.90 at 98,
we made 2 runs on the street on the way home.
his car is a 89 Formula 350. T tops, and dual cat exhaust option. not a bad lookin bird.
Mods:
L98 350, with slp runners, TPIS bigmouth base, 58mm TB, ported plenum
1.6 roller rockers
Edit: Edelbrock TES headers
3inch catback with i think a flowtech muffler.. NO cats
30lb inj, custom chip, SLP cold air
3.70 rear 9 bolt.
stock trans with shift kit, stock converter
some minor suspension, also on street tires
my car is 89 Irocz.. mods in sig.
we go from what i think was 45 roll on the first one.
we didnt 3 honk or w/e, he took off first and i soooon after mashed it.. but his car jsut took the early lead before the trans could shift to second gear. he got me by about a car by 70-75ish before i shut down
next run... 45ish roll again. this time i hit the throttle first and him soon after. we are even at the hit, till my car downshifts second gear and the stall brings rpms up. i pull 1/3 car then he slowly comes back to about dead even.. and it stays that way till about 90 when he probly pulls maybe his nose a few feet past mine. we shut down at 100.
two good running L98's. my car did well considering i was down on mods by alot

yeah i know.. he usually traps around 99mph but a few runs were 100 and one was 102mph!
i'm now about 97-98 in the summer and 100 in the fall so far. so we are close
but with his 3.70 gears, he tops out third gear at 98-99mph. actualy on the 1/4 mile runs he is running 5300rpms thru the traps.. which is a tad too high, but his TPI stuff should help bring peak up to near 4800-5000, better than my stocker stuff.
so after 100mph i should have slight advantage.

I wonder how those 30# injectors are doing. Seems like extreme overkill on a basically stock motor. Stock meaning, heads and cam and exhaust manifolds. I know he has a custom tune, but he is trapping over 100mph. Tell him to slap on some headers and see what happens. Stock manifolds suck, especially now with more air going in and the same coming out.
Still interesting though. I have to agree with you. Your car should have the advantage though. What gears do you have?

Sounds to me like his car is tuned horribly. His car should be running much better than yours and trapping 103mph consistently. Nothing wrong with running 30lb injectors on that car if it is tuned appropriately. He needs to be retuned (or else there is a problem such as his motor is down on compression due to bad rings, timing off, etc.)

he is doing 13.6-13.7's pretty consistantly but most of that gain in ET is from the 3.70 gears.. we can launch at the same time, but he pulls alittle immediately thru first and into part of second. but his pull stops till i shift third, when he has about a full car on me and it stays that way all the way thru the 1/4. at the 1/4 he usually has 1-1.5 cars on me at the most. its a good race. if i get traction, cut a good 60, and leave first off the R/T, i'll have a good chance at beatin him LOL.
and i think if i had abit more gear, i'd be right with him.
i do think his car needs abit better tune tho. the car dyno'd somewhere in the mid 240's at the wheels.. 30lb inj is abit overkill but if tuned right for them, they will work like you said. but with his 3.70's he is crossin the line at 5300rpms.. so i think that might be hurtin him abit.

I think his times are about average for that car with those mods. If he is making 240-250rwh he is in the same hp range as me. I think his times could be alittle better, maybe in the 13.3 range at around 101-102 since hes got 3.70's. I dont think that car could trap much higher than 102 with the stock L98 cam though.
My best times are
242 hp 325 lb ft- 13.8 at 97 w/2.77's
249 hp 334 lb ft- 13.5 at 99 w/3.42's
249 hp 334 lb ft- 13.4 at 100 w/3.42's on slicks.
