those motors were most likely blueprinted and completely gone through. everything was done to them that they could within the rules, which are strict. i think they're supposed to be stock but they weren't just pulled off the engine line.
A friend of mine used to build the corvette challenge cars' engines which made more power than any stock L98.
Those race cars were probably maintained very well, i wish i had one, it's probably worth a lot of money too (those ttops and purple paint don't help the value though).

my 1LE doesn't seem too fast copmpared to my friends 91 z28. it's a 5.7 w/ like 50,000 miles on it, very good condidtion, we both have full exhaust n custom ram air (so exact same mods), my 1LE has 100,000 miles on it and i loose by a full car length every time we race. but other iroc's n z28's i beat all day long. i think the 1LE's were probably really fast but mine has way too many miles now.

love the 200 mph tape over the headlight buckets on that one!
read the passage about the motors under the pic to see what they did to them.

I had an ex 87 Player Challenge car too!(305, 5 spd 3.45s)
Weight plays a factor- mine was a total stripper-
and although it was "stock" blue printing plus some exhuast work (maybe ported heads?) likely raised the hp.
I beat 350 IROCs and Mustang GTs no problem. In fact it was only 0.3-0.4 tenths slower then a LT1
4th gen.
