Want a good laugh?

Purchased a 85 Camaro a few months back guy told me it was a 350 of course it wasn’t and I didn’t care too much it has a clean rust free body and new interior. Recently came across a pair or 059 vortec heads and vortec intake so I’m throwing that on but when I was removing the old heads found out one is a 416 head and the other is a 450 head. I’ve been wondering why the car just felt sluggish and now I know why. I never bothered to check both heads just the drivers side which is the 450 head. Suppose this would be a tale to be cautious because people are shady when selling cars. I can’t believe the car ran as well as it did I thought it was just a normal 305 being sluggish but now it really makes sense.

Re: Want a good laugh?

It sounds like you are rectifying the head issue, but that always leads to the nagging question about just what the rest of it might look like.

Maybe you'll get lucky when you pull the heads and discover that the pistons aren't half flat-tops and half dished

Re: Want a good laugh?

I remember about 25 years ago the local Advanced Auto Parts near me had a reman 305 long block on display with 2 different heads. Not a good advertisement for their quality control.

We pulled an engine out of an old 34 chevy coupe show car. It had an #882 76cc head on one side and a #601 58cc head on the other!!!! Crazy thing is it ran decent, we never had ran it hard or anything but it putted along to carshows and wherever pretty good.

Re: Want a good laugh?

Not heads on the same engine, but similar "**** show":
I saw this truck/Rat-rod beside the road in Wyoming....caught my eye so I pulled over to look at it. Parked in front of a trailer park, for sale. Owner saw me and came out to talk it up.

At first it looked pretty interesting: two SBC's in a row connected by a stern drive engine coupler to a custom receiver bolted to the rear engine's damper. They were feeding into a THM400 going to a rockwell Dooly rear, under a 5th wheel. Cab was '50's something truck cab, chopped and all rust. It was weird to me, however that one engine had a single plane (Victor Jr?) and the other had a Performer intake.....one had a Holley the other had an Edelbrock. They had different exhaust manifolds, different valve covers water necks. water pumps....The weirdness didn't stop there. Owner began talking. He proudly bragged to me about how one engine was a 307, the other was a 283. He'd "evened them out", however, by using more cam in the smaller engine, so all was good.

I figured that the contraption was probably good for about 350 hp, but the owner set me straight; "NO modern Diesel truck can keep up with this thing!" He told me. He'd leave anything in the dust! Sure thing, buddy. I wouldn't be surprised if it had 4 different heads, on the two engines!

Even worse, the 601 head is a 53cc chamber. bet that thing would have run terribly if it were beat on.
