Oil dipstick after header install?

What are my options for a oil dip stick after my shorty header install? I have no airtubes. All I see is the lokar 99238FP? Is everyone really spending $105 for a dipstick and tube?

Use the original hardware (stud kind of thing) with a tube of some sort such as water pipe to replicate the thickness of the manifold.

I used one of those stainless braided flex tubes from Summit. Works pretty good.

I ended up buying a Mr. Gasket 9705G Polished Aluminum/Braided Dipstick for 1980-Up SBC for $45 so we will see if this works or not.

Re: Oil dipstick after header install?

I just installed some of Doug's shorty headers and when trying to remove the nut that holds the oil dip stick, it torqued and destroyed my dipstick. Now, it is impossible to find a replacement based on GM 10055724. Does anyone know of any other options? I ordered one from Specter (chrome) but the tube diameter was too large to install.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I included pictures of install for viewing pleasure.

Re: Oil dipstick after header install?

I have the Lokar dipstick with my headers, but it is pretty much useless if the car is hot. Wish the handle was longer. As it sits now, it is right by the header tube.

BTW, hassgrant, that is a very nice looking engine bay.

Re: Oil dipstick after header install?

Thank you for the compliment and the recommendation!

Right now I just took my broken tube and pinched it off so I can keep oil from blowing out until I get a new tube.

My idea was to get the car painted this week, but the header job caused me some issues: 1) broken oil tube; 2) waiting on new O2 sensor; 3) broke the coolant fan switch on passenger side.

Now I have to wait on parts so I can start the car and take to the paint shop.

It's always something!

Re: Oil dipstick after header install?

Just finished with the install of a fresh engine.
I went with an inner tube from Shafer.

The dip stick and external tube was some Amazon special.

Amazon Amazon

Both fit well. No additional support of the outer tube was needed. Just be sure you orientate it the correct way because twisting it into the proper position isn't as easy as you might think.

Lol. I did the exact same thing working on my exhaust last week. First broke the switch connector just trying to get it off. Barely touched it and it broke right in my fingers. Then broke the switch itself getting the manifold out. Those things are fragile.
