406 SBC starter troubles
Hey there just throwing out a problem I have been having.hopefully someone has more insight. So I have a 406 sbc interally balanced with a neutral 350 balancer and flywheel of which I believe to be 153 tooth.my problem is my starter bolts up but isnt happy seems to be only engaging the end of the starter gear. It is a staggered bolt pattern starter.would an aftermarket starter with a universal mounting be my only option at this point

Re: 406 SBC starter troubles
IIRC,earlier blocks, prior to about 1978,never came with 153 tooth flexplate-causes starter fitment problems, may need to use168 tooth flexplate or special starter.

Drilled and tapped my block for the smaller starter.
I use a 92-96 corvette starter.

if you have a 153 tooth flexplate/flywheel, you need a starter with an inline mounting pattern. the staggered mount starters are for a 168 flywheel. hope this helps

Ask Sofakingdom. He might make a sticky for the manual trans 153 tooth flywheel 400 sbc combo.

I can't make stickies.
Just search my userID for this topic. I've posted about a million times what the problem is and what the solution is and more importantly what it is NOT, with photos, measurements, and so on; all taken on a 1973 3951509 block. I'm tired of typing it.
