a/c compressor noise

a/c compressor started making this noise only when clutch is engaged. If I shut the a/c off it doesn't make any noise. And it starts smoking. I can't tell exactly where the smoke is coming from. It makes cold air. I can't get the video to load here or my FB. What is bad? The clutch?

Re: a/c compressor noise

The fact that the system is cooling is a good indication. A description of the noise could be helpful.

It would be helpful to verify correct tension on the belt, and belt condition.

It may also be a good idea to clean the clutch surfaces. Electromotive spray cleaner can work well for this.

Further, with the engine turned off, grab the outer hub of the compressor clutch and see if the compressor can be turned by hand. If there is significant resistance and/or noise when turning by hand, there may be a compressor problem.

Re: a/c compressor noise

Belt is in good condition and tension appears to be correct. And I can turn the compressor by hand. It sounds like the clutches chatting/slipping. It was constant the first time it did it but this time it's off and on and no the clutch is not engaging, disengaging.

Re: a/c compressor noise

If you were replacing the clutch assembly would you replace the coil also? The coil is working properly now. Just wondering what you would do. Thanks.

Re: a/c compressor noise

Are you sure the noise is coming from the compressor? I had/have a similar problem where I was getting a chattering sound. The sound was coming from the belt tensioner (compressor was new) whenever the compressor kicked on. I replace the tensioner and it went away for a little while. Now I get a little chatter once in a while when the compressor loads the belt. Not sure if I also have a problem with the new compressor, charge level or the new tensioner. So, you might want to check that...

Re: a/c compressor noise

Again, if it was a bearing...I never saw a bearing put out smoke like this does. And that bearing feels good. I have a new clutch assembly on the way. I will find out.

Re: a/c compressor noise

Id prolly replace he whole compressor... if the thing is old and worn, then the other components are about to go too.
Plus I think you need special tools to change the clutch, bearing and coil etc...

I had a similar problem on my S10 compressor which is basically the same design... it worked fine but the thing made noises ./ some smoke....I sisn;t want to repalce the compressor right away.....I just squirted some silicone spray on the area and that fixed it for a year. and then I did it again.. etc...

Lasted a long time till I was able to get a new one.

Re: a/c compressor noise

If the seal on the shaft is worn out and leaking oil that could be burning and smoking as the clutch slips on the shaft. Is the smoke coming off the pulley or is the pulley really hot? Just an idea...

Re: a/c compressor noise

That could be. There are no visible leaks but I don't have the clutch off yet. I should have it changed mid/late next week. I will let you know the outcome. Thanks for all the ideas.

Re: a/c compressor noise

I removed the old a/c clutch today. The matting surfaces were very rough. Everything was dry. So I put the new clutch w/ coil on today & ran it with a/c on max & fan on high for about 25 minutes and everything was quiet and it was blowing ice cold air. "smiles". Time will tell. But it looks like it's fixed. It rained last night so my road is mud otherwise I would have taken it for a ride. Maybe tomorrow. Thanks for the help.
