AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
Has anyone used this fuel pump? Claims to deliver 15% more than stock so an improvement(?) without going really big. I had a Walboro but never got to the upgrades that would need it.

There's no such thing as "improvement" with a fuel pump. You either have enough fuel, or you don't have enough fuel and you go lean - which breaks $hit.
A $25 fuel pump is laughable. And seriously - would you really want to pull your fuel tank a second time when it quits over a $75 difference to a REAL fuel pump? Get a 255 (DW, AEM, Walbro, etc) or a 340 and be done with it.

Re: AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
Not really an answer to my question but as far as "real" fuel pumps go the original lasted 25 years and the Walbro I had was exactly the same externally as the stock pump but could deliver way more gas. So, really an improvement if you need it. I still have a stock 3.1 so stock pump is fine for now.

Re: AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
I was just about to start a thread about fuel pumps with the Autobest HP2251 among the list of candidates.
I do agree with GeneralDisorder, a $25 fuel pump scares me.
AIRTEX E8279 flows 55 GPH (208lph) for $29...
Autobest HP22551 flows about the same as the AIRTEX
Next candidate would be the Summit Racing brand SUM-250105 which flows 255lph for $120...would you trust a summit pump? Who makes summit pumps?
Aeromotive Stealth 11569 pump that is 340lph for $130....but what amps do a 340lph pump draw? Are they compatible with stock relay and wiring?
My selection also comes down to availability. I am not going to wait weeks/months for a part. I will pick what is available.

Re: AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
I had a fuel pressure issue and knew delivery was the problem so had to drop the tank to check on everything. The car has been sitting for most of the last 5 years after I was moved from CA to TX and it turned out the tank was rusty, the sock was gone and the pump inlet was clogged. The Walbro pump is a bit corroded and may be usable but for now I'm just going with a new tank and new stock parts to get going again. Finally able to devote some time to the car but it'll be suspension and brakes first and engine stuff later which is when I'll need a beefier fuel pump.
As for upgrading the wiring for a higher flow pump it's probably a good idea but I ran the Walbro for quite some time with the stock wiring. I never looked at the current draw and wire sizes.

I'm currently running a Walbro 450 (the new E85 compatible one) on the stock 86 wiring in my Trans Am. I have the Racetronix kit on order but it hasn't arrived yet. Been fine the last few weeks that I've been driving with the 450. The wiring isn't hot (checked with a thermal camera), and I'm running about 400 HP with 100lb injectors. It may be an issue when I strap on the Procharger though so wiring harness is coming.....

Re: AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
Given the effort required to change a fuel pump on these cars, there is no way on God's little green acre I would install some 25 dollar POS. And I avoid AirTex like the plague. Pumps that are guaranteed to fail within six months...... I would stick with either stock, or, a KNOWN good brand..... I am not real fond of Walbro though either... mine failed within the first year. Ended up reinstalling a stock sender/pump, and it was still working great when I sold the car. (ten years later......)

Re: AUTOBEST HP2251 fuel pump
So got it all put back together with new gas and... nothing. After taking it all apart checked voltages and continuity and it was the pump! Someone put a hex on the Airtex. So new Walbro and all is good again. Lesson learned. Test the pump first.
