Stock LG4 Static timing ‘85 T/A CDN non ccc
I’ve been working through some tune up stuff, trying to make the most out of my LG4 (turd).
I’ve read the ‘85 model year received a slight compression bump, and was wondering where to start on initial timing. The under hood sticker indicates 4*, the car is at 6* (vacuum hose disconnected from distributor and plugged).
It’s pulling 18 inches of mercury, at operating temp with the heat riser open on the passenger manifold at specified 550 rpm, though it does slowly hunt.
My old school timing light doesn’t have an offset on it so I can’t do total timing without taping the balancer, but if there is value in it I’ll gladly invest.
Thanks

Without a timing tape on the balancer or a dial-back timing light, all you can to is advance the timing 2 degrees at a time until bad things (ping/knock) start to happen. Then pull it back 2 degrees.
It's nearly impossible to get where you want to be unless you know where you are at right now.

Thank you. I’ve ordered a timing tape set.
I found an excellent write up on the vacuum controlled HEI distributor by Jester in the carburetor section (of course)...
