1989 camaro 305 TBI car shuts off when coming to a stop.
I have look high and low on thirdgen to find someone who has had the same problem as me. So far I have found some with similar issues but nothing exactly like my situation. When i purchased the car it had a hesitation problem when it got up to operating temp and I checked the codes and it was the ERG valve. I replaced it along with the fuel filter and the problem went away. Then it started to die when coming to a stop. It always starts right back up the idle and in gear rpms are where they are supposed to be. So far I have replaced the iac valve and set the minimum air. I have also rebuilt the throttle body. The issue continues! The previous owner also did a tune up before I bought it (spark plugs, wires, break booster and fuel pump). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I do share your pain. I've gotten used to it actually.lol I have a 89 Firebird 305 TBI Auto that I bought in 2012 and it has done this occasionally all of these years. It's very random and it seems to have something to do with temperature. In the summer, it will do it quite a bit UNLESS I have the A/C running.. If A/C is on, it will never die, not even once. It never does it in the winter. Idle is normal. It always starts right back up and it might not do it again for several weeks or months. I have tested and looked into just about anything you can think of EXCEPT dropping the gas tank! I'm 95% convinced that something in the tank is causing mine to do this, maybe a deteroriated pick up hose, maybe a intermittent pump, don't know. I will not drop the tank until the pump fails. Other than this little quirk, it runs just fine. Seriously, mine's been doing this sine 2012 and still it goes. Car is driven 2-3 times a week to work and back, well was until I started working from home in March.lol Now, I get in it a couple nights a week and drive it. So far this year, it died on me once while pulling into my driveway. You guessed it, had the A/C off and windows down.
I will say this, about 2 years ago, it started doing it really bad, like every time I slowed down. I replaced the oil pressure switch next to the oil filter and that solved that problem and it went back to it's usual random shut down.lol I just gave up trying to figure it out. Maybe you will figure it out and solve the problem for both of us. Fingers crossed!
There are a lot of threads on here about shut downs, but even after reading several of those over the years, I have been unable to fix it. That's why I think it's in the tank. It's the only area I have not looked into yet.

Thanks for replying! As it happens I changed the oil pressure switch this morning and the problem continues. I plan on checking the timing tomorrow hopefully that helps. As it stands the car does it everytime I slow down rapidly or come to a complete stop.

I would guess timing or clogged EGR valve.

Re: 1989 camaro 305 TBI car shuts off when coming to a stop.
I fought poor idle and driveability for years in my 88 TBI. Believe it or not I thought I had discovered all the vacuum leaks until I ran across this youtube video.
Since making this repair, which seems like a very common and inevitable problem due to the plastic parts and age, my issues went away. Based on my experience I would suggest this repair before doing anything else when it comes to poor idle and performance.
Keep us posted!

I just got a timing light so when I get time I'm going to check and set the timing. Thanks for the video suggestion I'm going to check it out and see if it will help.
