Best Oil? Carbureted '89 Firebird

I know that Oil is a really important element for my car, and right now I'm using Valvoline 10W-30.
However, I've gotten some people telling me that Mobil 1 is a better option for carbureted engines.

How does a carbs needs differ from Fuel Injection in terms of oil?
Recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Best Oil? Carbureted '89 Firebird

Carbs like to foul the oil with tons of unburned fuel - especially on cold start. This leads to dramatically shorter engine life from fuel dilution and cylinder washing and there's really no oil that's going to stop it. Whatever you use it should be changed often. I would buy an inexpensive synthetic and change it at least every 2500 miles since this is obviously an aftermarket carb that likely has some pretty rich tuning and none of the 80's advancements such as the E4ME Q-Jet had that would reduce fuel dilution, etc.

Best thing you can do for engine life and oil life is put the fuel injection back on.

EVery day this comes up on every forum. There is no magic oil period
Pricy cheap doesnt matter..as said keep it clean and use a good filter.
None will magically give you tons more life than the other. I run cheapo oil for my daily and a wix filter almost 200k and runs like a top.

Project Farm on YouTube, many white papers authored by governing bodies and manufacturers, and API oil ratings beg to differ.

While none are magic is correct there are differences between oils that, depending on your usage, can make a difference.

For a grocery-getter, sure.
I think you could stand to do some more reading on engine oil tests. Here are two quick and good reads by AMSOIL

Re: Best Oil? Carbureted '89 Firebird

the consensus is "it isn't the type of oil you use" (and in older, higher mileage carbed vehicles i personally would not use synthetic)
" its the matter of changing it at or before the recommended frequency with an oil filter that DOES NOT SAY FRAM ON IT..."
(worst filters made,period)
