Rear Main Seal Housing Dowel Pin Removal

Rear Main Seal Housing Dowel Pin Removal
The dowel pin that locates the rear main seal housing is flush with the block and I’m looking for suggestions to pull it out enough to locate the housing. I tried threading in an easy out, locking pliers on the easy out and hammer taps, but the easy out pulls free. Maybe tap for a bolt and try the locking pliers and hammer trick on that? I know I can drill it out, but want to avoid any errant metal shavings flying into a fresh build. The dowel will spin free with the easy out so it’s not seized. Thanks

Looks like just a roll pin. Is it actually split down the full length? If so, stick something in there to bend it around, so you have something to get a grip on, then twist, and pull. Take the dead one to the parts store, and get a new one. Maybe a little longer, so it CAN'T be pushed in.

You could the clutch pilot bushing removal technique using grease. But the split in that roll pin might allow the grease to shoot across the garage.

Good idea. 5 minute epoxy should do the trick.
Then pack it with grease and use something that just fits inside of the roll pin (a punch would be ideal) and give it a whack.
It should slide right out unless you were very careless with the epoxy.

I didn’t have any epoxy on hand and didn’t want to run back out. I wedged a thin flathead under the dowel right at the split, couple hammer taps and broke it right in half. Robbed a spare block of its dowel as a replacement. Thanks for all the suggestions.
