Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

In the trash can where it belongs. No, actually I've kept mine in a box in the closet for at least a decade, probably a decade and a half now that I think about it... Aside from no good place to mount the thing in a thirdgen, I haven't really seen any reason to mess with it. Just one more thing to potentially fail.

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

Once I installed it. idle improved as well as gas mileage..this was 14 years ago. So.. the question still remain for a useful reply from someone who has mounted one.

thank you

I'll try and get a better picture tomorrow. Mine is up behind passenger valve cover on firewall.

Hidden in the battery where it belongs. Being its a MSD product, I have it setup to be bypassed quickly if I suspect a failure. (Been through about 5 or so)

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

I have used an MSD 6xx box on all mo hot rods since the 80s. I continued to buy because it keeps the spark plugs clean and improves idle quality. I've had only one fail and it got fried because the voltage regulator failed and I didn't have a fuse between the MSD and the battery. I have a non-A/C car and mine is mounted in the same place as Boom's. You might be able to mount it under the battery or charcoal canister so that it is out of sight.

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

Mine is also located right there on the firewall by the blower box. I've never had any issues with it, but deep down I also know it's not necessary. I can bypass it literally in 60 seconds if need be.

.....as for idle....what kind of engines are you guys running that you had idle issues in the first place!?

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

Thanks for all of the reply's.

Boom - I have a AC car so.. the Firewall is too full to attempt putting anything else there.

I might try to build a mount/tray for placement on top of the Canister.. but I think the Air intake tube is restricting the combined height of the Canister and the MSD Box.. Under is the Vacuum reservoir.. so that is out.

Might look under the battery tomorrow as them might have some room. Or look in the dash.

TTop350 - Great idea on that Battery box !

I mounted mine on the relay bracket between the master cylinder and the fender. Fits perfect.

Did you mount the battery in the spare tire spot? What bracket did you use, or did you fab one?

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

Mine is mounted in the landfill. I used to run MSD products back in the day but soon realized that they fail quite a bit.

In my opinion, a properly running OEM HEI ignition system is more than capable of running stock to mildly modified TPI engines.

I had a 97 WS6 with a hidden nitrous kit. The fuel, nitrous and purge solenoids along with the RPM window switch and fuel pressure safety switch were all mounted inside a gutted out Delco battery. I ran the actual battery inside the spare tire area with the bottle. Yes, there was a plate separating them. No one had any idea the nitrous was there. Remote bottle opener and heater switches along with a pressure gauge were mounted inside the center console. It was a WOT setup so the micro swtich was mounted on the TB which had an OEM cover on it.

Dont ask how I gutted out a battery and disposed of the contents.

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

PO moved the relay bracket from the firewall to the top of the wheel well. The 6A fit right at the top corner of the firewall.

See post 109.

Note that's manual brakes so easier to see.

They better send me a new damn box or repair it.

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

I was just given a 6AL for free and was wondering where to mount mine as well. I deleted the AC and am gonna get the ac delete box but I feel like its not a good idea to mount it to the delete box.

Mine has been on the ac delete box for about 15 years with no issue. I've heard the newer boxes don't last, and experience seems to prove that point.

Bent up some aluminium sheet into a platform that fits over the charcoal canister.

Re: MSD 6AL BOX LOCATION

Well just got off the phone with MSD. Even though the box is two years old with very little mileage. I was told it's out of warranty and they're not going to do anything for me. Now I'm waiting for the repair department to take my call. Which clearly they're going to charge me for. Garbage product with garbage customer service. $385 box that's going to last two years? Sign me up, what a great product!
