Tpi to Carb swap won't start - lots of diag info in thread, what am I missing?
Hi!
Just got my engine back together and I'm having issues getting it to fire. Here's what I got...it will fire randomly, sometimes I'll get a few chugs, sometimes a running engine for a few seconds but most of the time it just cranks. I can hear the pump priming, car has gas, I can smell gas in the carb, gauge at the regulator reads 0psi at all times (possibly faulty or hooked up wrong) and starting fluid makes no difference in starting or not. Carb is brand new Holley street avenger (,supposedly runs out of box)
I'm getting some backfire spitting out of the carb at random times before it dies. I believe that the timing was set to be close to tdc on 1. When I retarded the timing I got it to run at like 2000 rpms for a few seconds, then died. Pink wire to distributor has power and slightly dims during turning over.
I swapped the cam in the process but made sure that the timing marks were aligned.
I read something about wiring the oil pressure sending unit to the wipers to keep the pump running, i haven't done that?
Brand new Cam, non computer distributor, Carb, cap, rotor, ign module, fuel reg, intake mani, timing chain and gears.

Which fuel pressure regulator are you using? If you disconnect the fuel line from the regulator to the carb and out it into a bucket, do you get fuel?
Don't wire the fuel pump to the wipers. Sounds like a bad idea. You need switched power to the fuel pump relay to turn it on. The main power wire for the relay to the pump should be wired straight to the battery via the junction block under the hood. You just need to ground the relay to run the pump. You can wire a manual switch inside the car to ground the relay, or use a second relay to do it automatically when you turn the key on. You could tap into the switched power for the radio as an easy example. On my 92 RS, I had an unused spot in the fuse block under the dash that I was able to tap into to power the fuel pump.

Tried wiring to the wipers since postng...what a mess. Had to have the wipers on to get fuel flow. But it was enough to get the fuel flowing and was able to break in my cam before ruining it. At least at this point I know what I need to do. Thanks for the info! I'll be rewiring to a switch next day off. This swap has been much more in depth than the tech article made it out to be!

Resolution to this - It was the fuel pump relay that was priming, but not keeping the pump running so as soon as the bowls dried up, it was dead in the water. I also had a faulty carb with a massive leak in it from Holley. After properly wiring the fuel pump and swapping to a working carb, the car fired up and runs perfect.
