Smog reject - When 4 pin connector pulled from distributor car stalls
Hi Guys,
My car is running fine, but the smog guy sent me back because he thinks there is a retard in the timing. I passed the EVAP test but when he pulled the 4 pin connector, the car stalled and he said it would not pass with bad timings.
I have no Check Engine lights and car seems to be running fine to me...
Do i need to get the timing set with a light or is it a minor adjustment i could do myself?

The base timing should be set using a timing light. There should be a noticeable change in timing when the EST connector is removed or reconnected, but the engine should remain running in either case.
A good starting point for base timing on an unmodified LG4 is 4° BTDC for regular fuel. If cylinder head temperatures are kept lower due to modifications or the camshaft has been replaced with something providing greater duration the base timing may be set to accordingly to provide the advance necessary for best operation.

The 4 Pin Connector at the distributor shouldn't be unplugged. If it is the car will stall. What he should be looking for is the tan/black connector near the A/C box to disconnect to check timing.

Wait, wait, wait. Vader's advice is absolutely correct IF WE ARE TALKING ABOUT A CARURETED LG4 305 ENGINE. I'm getting confused with KNIGHTE and project89 posting like they're the same guy with the same car.
IS THIS AN LG4 CARBURETED 305 ENGINE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT??

Yep LG4 carb and I believe the 4 pin wire is correct. There seems to be a problem with the harmonic balancer. They could not get it to set at 0.
Instead they found top dead center and set it manually or something. When they did this (and the mechanic tuned my carb to run a little leaner) I passed smog!
Yay!
