Hi guys,

I'm working with a good friend (and eventually my Godson, who is still too little to turn too many wrenches, but will get bigger fast) on a 1991 Camaro RS project. Purchased for just a few hundred dollars, the '91 is a complete car that allegedly overheated and thus ended up in a non-running state. However, not much more is known yet.

My friend also found in his Craigslist scavenging another 1991 RS that he can get for parts. The one he found is a 305 5spd and has taken a good hit at some point in the not so distant past, so is probably best just as a parts car. The goal is to get Camaro #1 up and running and possibly to do it with the engine from Camaro #2.

If you were someone stripping a 1991 Camaro RS for every good, usable part that you could easily store say in an attic or a small corner of the garage, what parts would you strip from it?

How hard would it be to convert the good Camaro, which is an auto, to the 5spd setup from the parts car?.... Is that worth it? What 5spds came in those, T5's? Are they ok for mildly modded motors or will they break like glass?

Something interesting to mention, is Camaro #1 (the good body) is a 305 that someone converted to a carb. I don't know that it's a performance setup. Looks like a 4bbl with some kind of iron intake manifold that's painted. I don't know if the parts car is carb or factory TBI. If it's TBI, would you swap the TBI back onto the good car or just stay with carb? I am assuming (maybe wrong, but assuming) that the donor/parts car has all of the wiring still in it. They say it's running.

All suggestions welcomed. Note: I already am going to suggest we pull most of the interior on the parts car and save all of those parts, as well as the complete A/C system, any kind of wiring we can easily remove and label, tail lights (if they look good), and maybe doors, rear hatch, axle, drive-shaft....

I have stripped a few Firebirds, I take everything off and scrap the shell.
It is cheaper to get a parts car but its a lot of work. I would not count on a good motor, if it is great, but buy it planning on it needing to be rebuilt.

Thanks for the advice. Turns out we may be passing on the parts car due to lack of space and time to quickly tear it down. Focus turns to a good, but highly affordable, 350 to replace the dead 305. Since it was already a carb-converted car, my buddy will stay with a carb setup, since that's easier to go bigger (easy home tuning).

If one did need parts for a 1991 RS, such as interior pieces, wiring harnesses, etc, where would you get them?

You can find great parts in the classifieds section here, used and unused. I generally go to wrecking yards for decent parts. Brand new I find a few retailers online. Hawksthirdgen can be pricey but good quality

What he said. If you are lucky you might find a guy in your area who parts third gens.
We have a couple here in MN.

Like already said classifieds on here, craigslist, ebay, local junkyards/pull a part, local swap meets, etc, hawks third gen parts, third gen ranch, camaro heaven

I know there is a few guys on here that parts out third gens (me being one of them, but I'm just getting started, only have 3 cars right now to part)
