1990 firebird

- hopefully u guys can help I'm loosing my mind trying to figure this out. So I bought a firebird a couple months ago it had its problems but I seemed to finally fix them got the brake light to go off and also the oil light. Its a 350 but I was driving and heard a belt squeak and then felt a little scuffle as the car shut off. I rolled it over to the shoulder and thought a belt may have broke but all seemed well with them it would start but not run. So I knew it wasn't the distributed or alternator or anything along those lines I assumed the car had jumped time took it home and manually turned it to tdc and saw it was off at the first the engine was hard to turn manually but all of a sudden it's easy and every time I line it up and go to start it I look back at the chain and its off again. I have enough tension there's a new chain how does it manage to keep jumping time. Or am I crazy I know the cam moves faster than the crank and it goes around twice before hitting tdc I just can't figure it out and I'm tempted to buy another firebird a 85 for 600 its running and just needs a driver side axle I'll take it off mine if I can't fix it

The cam only turns 1/2 the speed of the crank.... Hints the larger sprocket on the cam. It does seem what your describing is jumping time. Replacing the chain isn't a terrible job and probably needs done anyway.

I think I've misread this. You have already replaced the chain? Put both marks at 12 o'clock and reset your distributor, and then rotate the engine and see what happens.
