Head Cleaning
Hey All,
Is cleaning a head properly, to get all the carbon and stuff out something that can be done at home, or should it go to company for cleaning? if at home what kind of tools, bits should one use.
Thanks

Re: Head Cleaning
It's tough to scrub in all the little nooks and crannies. Get off most of the junk as best you can first. Then it's time for a good spray down with Easy Off oven cleaner. You know- the stuff that cleans off greasy carboned-up junk out of your oven? Works the same on greasy carboned-up junk clinging to your cylinder heads, too. Won't hurt aluminum that I'm aware of, having used it to clean the crud off (aluminum) piston faces and ringlands, but I've never actually done it on aluminum cylinder heads.

Re: Head Cleaning
Makes a big mess to do it at home, and doesn't do a very thorough job usually.
For as little as it costs, probably something better left to the shop.

Re: Head Cleaning
My machine shop charges $50 per pair to hot tank clean bare heads. Not sure if price will be any different if fully assembled, never had assembled heads that I needed to have clean that I didn't rebuild.
