Fuel pressure

Hi Guys, I have a strange problem I would like to bounce off of the board. I had a new fuel pump and filter put in my 91 GTA with a 5.7 TPI engine. I am currently getting a reading of 20 on my pressure gauge. Drops to 18 when I throttle up. Apply vacuum to the regulator and there is little change. What are the chances they put in a TBI fuel pump? What is the pressure on a TBI pump? My care acts like it is starving for gas and should be reading 40 to 47 right?

Re: Fuel pressure

It is either a TBI pump, as they top out at about 20 psi. Or the rubber fuel line between the pump and sender split. There is usually a pulsation damper in place of the hose, they too can leak.

Re: Fuel pressure

I'm going down there Friday to have them "re-check" it. The guy swears her put the right pump in. I think he is mistaken.

Re: Fuel pressure

It better not be. They charged me $107 for the pump plus a strainer at $20. Better be Delco. Anyway, I will find out Friday.

Re: Fuel pressure

What was wrong with the old pump, do you still have it?

if the car was sitting for a long time you could also have clogged fuel lines or a dirty fuel tank.

I guess you will find out more tomorrow.

Re: Fuel pressure

The pump was dead. Wouldn't fire at all. I assume that was the reason they parked the car originally. I had them replace the pump, sending unit and the filter. The car is drivable, but barley. Act's like it is fuel starved.

RBob.
Well, turns out it was the little hose between the fuel pump and the sending unit. Good call. They replaced the pump as well.

Re: Fuel pressure

my car is doing the same thing too. what hose are u talking about so that I can check mine. but for me I just installed a airtex e3210 which was said to be for that car and I also replaced the filter and sock but I still get next to nothing as far as fuel pressure. when I turn the key to on I can hear the pump prime and me gauge will go up to like 15psi but drop to like 6 or less psi. this car is driving me crazy. just put crate 350 in and haven't drove it yet. got it to start and run just after I replaced the pump but even then the pressure wasn't right. plz help

Re: Fuel pressure

There is a hose between the pump and the sending unit(in the tank), mine hose blew up. The shop replaced it(had to remove the tank again).
