new engine new problems

i currently have a 355 sbc, flat top pistons comp cam 268xe, 210cc heads, double roller timing chain, air gap intake, and 670 street avenger carb. I broke them cam in per the directions that cam with comp cams. no glitter or metallic look in the oil. changed oil and filter and now time to tune and time. the problem, is that when I start the car itll start up but not run by itself. I have to keep giving it gas to run. I turn dist to advance and retard, no change only harder to get to fire and occasional pop through carb. I have the metering valve on the front to out 3 turns. at before it dies I have about 15 vac. I want to time this thing but cant get it to run to do so. temp stays at steady 185-195 with elect fans. anyone help me please! is my dist out? I put it in at tdc with the oil prime toward cylinder one. and pointer in correct location. im at a lose here. also I added a carb spacer and drilled and tapped my own hole for the trans module. that's the only thing different on the top end. maybe vac leak?

its easy to get the distributor in one tooth off. and to me, it sounds like a timing issue. id re visit that first

being a tooth off on the distributor would cause this much of a headache?

Reinstall dizzy with #1 TDC or reroute plug wires a cordingly with TDC.

Was the timing chain crank gear installed straight up , +4 , of -4?

its a stock 350 balancer off a newer motor, i went with an older block but used crank balancer and flywheel from old motor in new motor.

balancers are not all keyed the same you could just make your own TDC mark on the one you now have. or you could try and find one that matches your other components. this is a common thing but now you know the pitfalls of playing mix-n-match

Re: new engine new problems

I checked everything and its all lines up with tdc and the timing chain. I cannot get this thing to idle for nothing. only way it will attempt to idle is when the metering screws are 3-4 turns out on my street avenger. I checked and replaced every gasket vac line etc and still does it. is this a carb issue? itll start up fine and run 10 secs and rpms slowly drop as well as vac and shuts down. I dunno what else to check.

looked up the head recommendations and it calls for a fewlpro 1266 gasket. i have just your generic thin intake gasket. will this cause an issue like im seeing? internal leak rather then external?
