bad oil leak from rear of engine

lately i have been leaving oil spots under my 91 rs after having it running. there is oil all over the bottom of the pan near the drain. but i dont think the drain is leaking. pretty sure it is coming from higher and just running down. i pushed up on my flexplate / converter cover and a lot ( couple oz's) of oil came out of the little drain hole. this is leading me towards a RMS. would that be a good guess? i had the cover off about a week ago and noticed it was wet inside. i didnt see any oil on the flexplate or converter though.

Re: bad oil leak from rear of engine

It very well could be your rear main seal, but it could also be your oil pressure sending unit or the china wall. You wouldn't be the first person who had a leak there and it got between the block and the trans and appeared as a rear main leak. I believe someone on here lost a clutch to the oil pressure sending unit leak. Another possibility, although rare and unlikely, would be the three oil galley plugs above the cam, if one of them came loose.

the only OPSU i have is right above the oil filter. i will have to look at the back of the intake and see if i can see any running down. thanks for the idea

Re: bad oil leak from rear of engine

Was looking at it today and I think the oil coming out the little drain hole on the cover is coming from the opsu above the filter leaking and running down inside the cover like khulsebus mentioned.

But, with that said, the passenger side of my engine is leaking oil somewhere too. The starter and header are getting wet with oil from somewhere. I am thinking either valve cover or China wall. Would those make sense?

bump.

if it was the RMS seal leaking then it should be wet with oil on the flexplate and converter also right?

Re: bad oil leak from rear of engine

It may or may not. I would grab a can or two of brake clean or carb cleaner and see if that helps find where the leak is. Valve cover is possible, china wall is a slight possibility, but there is an oil pressure port to the drivers side of the distributor, that's where most people hook up their pressure sending unit. It's been a while since I worked on a small block, but my buddy reminded me about a plug towards the back of the block near the deck that also has oil behind it, but i could be wrong.

i thought brake or carb spray was used to find vacuum leaks? how would it help with finding an oil leak? there is a oil pressure port near the distributor but mine has a plug in it that has never been removed.

Re: bad oil leak from rear of engine

If you clean off all of the old oil, then you can see where the leak comes from once you start the engine again.

Re: bad oil leak from rear of engine

I am swapping my 700 r4 for a t-5 in my 87 firebird.I also have a oil leak on my 2.8.I do not have oil on the back of my flywheel, but the oil is all over the back of the oil pan.It is also all over the inside of the block. Is the oil coming from the cam cover that has 3 bolts in it?Is it ok to remove that cover or try to tighten those 3 bolts?
