no oil pressure

no oil pressure
I am having problems with the 350 in my s10 having no oil pressure. Ill start from the beginning with everything.
I had a bad float in my carb, and flooded the engine. I had fuel in the oil so I changed it and the filter. Started the truck up and everything was ok. The next day I ran it to play with the timing and carb and saw the oil pressure was showing low, I assumed it was low because it was at idle and the engine was warmed up so I bumped the throttle thinking it would show some pressure but nothing. I immediately shut it off.
I only had an electric gauge on the truck, so I installed a mechanical gauge. Still no pressure. I have a remote mount filter, so I took it off and cranked the engine over and it spit out a little bit of oil, not much. I pulled the distributor out and used a priming tool to spin the pump, and like before a little came out but not as much as I think should. I can hear it sucking, almost like its sucking a little oil and alot of air.
I have a canton deep sump pan in the truck, thats a s10 v8 swap specific pan. Somehting that I was weird about was that the pan has a 6 quart capacity, and I only put 4.5-4.75 quarts in it for it to be at the full level on the dip stick. I am using the canton in pan dip stick.
Sorry for the life story, just want everyone to know the story. So what do you guys think? Any tips or ideas on something I can try? Im worried there is a problem with the pick up. Its a real big pain pulling the engine in this truck because of how tight it all is. Ive thought about draining the pan to see if I can see the pick up tube, and possibly adding some more oil to see if the pump picks up.
Any help?

Re: no oil pressure
Drain the oil, get a good flashlight and look in the oil drain plug hole- see if you can see the pickup laying int he bottom of it (aftermarket pans usually have a decent sized drain hole). Alternatively, get a coat hanger and do it by feel. If it's laying in the bottom you can hear it move around when you push it with the coat hanger wire.
That would be my first guess.

Re: no oil pressure
I will deffinetly try that before pulling the engine.
I think I may be lucky though. I put 1/3 quart of oil in and cranked it over, and it poured oil out of the pressure line going to the remote mount filter. That's a good sign! So now I have a full 5 quarts of oil in the engine.

That's the pan I have and it's saying 6 quarts, but it was saying full at 4.5 quarts. I guess I'll contact canton and talk to them about it.
Thanks for the reply!

Re: no oil pressure
6qt pan plus 1qt for oil filter so you should have 7qts total.
Did you get the correct pickup tube for that pan?

Yeah I got the one that was recommended, I think it was a melling 210, or 211. I had 5 quarts total with the filter and that's showing full on the dip stick. Could it hurt to put 6 quarts in the pan even if its showing above full on the dip stick? Sorry I know that's a dumb question.

Sometimes aftermarket parts aren't very accurate. Hope you did no major engine damage! Brazing the pickup to the pump is always a good idea also.

Re: no oil pressure
Yeah that's what I was worried about. I swapped the pan in the truck, so brazing wasn't an option, I really wish I could of. The pick up was snug going in, and I put jb weld on it. I waited the proper amount of time for it to cure and made sure it set up correctly and installed the pan. I researched about using jb weld on the pickup, and it seemed to be ok to use.
Yeah I'm having some bad luck with aftermarket parts lately.

Re: no oil pressure
When you get a new aftermarket oil pan such as yours or the 7qt pan i got, the stock dipstick will not read correctly.
