'88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Hello...I had no luck searching on this so am hoping for some direct help.

When I had the heads off my "helper" managed to kill the old temperature sensors. The catalogs show a two-wire as replacements now, so I ordered a pair of those and a pair of two-wire connectors with pigtails.

My question is which wire to attach from the two-wire connectors to the old single wires (or both?) ... or what. The wires on the connectors, incidentally, are black and yellow.

Any help is appreciated. My guess is that someone here has this one solved already.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Is this tbi or tpi and where is the location of the sensor that was broke ? A two wire in the intake with a yellow and black lead is a cts for the ecm gm 15326386 or acdelco 213-928 . If it is in the passengers cylinder head it is a coolant the picture switch for the secondary fan on tpi or primary fan for tbi. If the one that is broke is between cylinder 1 and 3 that is for the temperature gauge.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

It's a TBI and there is one sensor on each head, down on the sides near the plugs.

Thanks, I'd gathered that the right one was for a fan and the left for the instrument cluster from the previous thread in this forum section. They do both LOOK like temperature sensors but the car is not in this room so I can't immediately check whether the hole for the left one is between the 1 and 3 plug holes. I'm pretty sure I'm working with temperature sensors here, and I ordered new ones with two terminals (only one is in hand so far) and matching connectors with pigtails (these came already)...mostly just wondering about how to wire it though, given that the old ones are one-wire and these are two-wire.

Sounds like you have the wrong sensors, the passengers side is acdelco D1852B
The temp gauge is acdelco 213-4793.

The passenger side will only be a grounding switch single wire and closes at 238f.
the drivers side if it controls. A temperature gage is a a thermistor ( thermal resister). Lower resistance higher reading on the gauge. If you are unsure of what you have cross reference the part numbers to see their usage application. The should be no rewiring with the correct switch, sensor or sender !

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Thanks, I will look at the catalogs again but this is the story I got from the local machine/real parts shop: the single-wire are not made any more, and these two-wire are the replacement part (no mention of there being a left and right part number). The situation seems to be the same at Summit but there might be some detail under one of the brands of temperature sensor that I've not run across so far. When you say, "cross reference the part numbers to see their usage application", what source of reference information are you referring to? Summit, for example, does not make a distinction between the left and right side that I was able to find. So far, you are the only one who has made that distinction but you seem to have some detailed knowledge of a distinction between the left and right side sensors. To my recollection, the old ones LOOKED the same, but since they'd had their connectors smashed, I don't know whether they might have been different in that regard. So if anyone has a fuller story about this, part numbers, etc., I sure need that information and appreciate hearing about it. This would include any directions to a reference which might tell the part numbers for the left and right temperature sensors.

Oh, thanks, I see AC Delco part numbers above now -- it is late here and I'm tired, sorry. I will try referencing via those numbers.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

I'm having all sorts of trouble with the forum not formatting things as I enter them, and actually losing text, so the below is not as readable as it should be. I found both part numbers on Amazon but the text I've been trying to enter to report on that is being chewed up by the forum such that only one of the links to the parts seems to make it to the forum post. Thanks again, it sounds like you know what you're doing with the part numbers, but would you mind telling me where you got the numbers, because I will have to order on that basis and I've had some problems in the past with parts people have directed me to not being the right ones. From what the below ones look like, though, I think you've led me to correct ones (and the two I've bought, and their two-wire pigtails, are wrong), which raises ANOTHER REALLY IMPORTANT QUESTION: if I just plug the holes in the block with the old ruined sensors, does the car's computer poll these sensors such that it will mess with how it runs and possibly make it fail a smogcheck? I need to get this car on the road for the sake of mobility and have not been able to register it due to not yet passing smog. So if I could just plug the holes, and take it to be smogged while waiting for the sensors it would be much easier on me to have the car working during the wait but if it will fail smog without the sensors, that effort is pointless. So, I found one of the right side ones on Amazon, and it looks reminiscent of the one I saw before it was broken:
ACDelco D1852B Switch Assembly : Amazon.com : Automotive ACDelco D1852B Switch Assembly : Amazon.com : Automotive
and that one reflects the connector that was there (I had to make a new one, but I do remember the connector tab as appears on this one on Amazon. Thanks a lot, it really seems like you got me out of a dead end and on the right track.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Here's the missing link to the driver's side part:
Amazon.com: ACDelco 213-4793 ACDELCO OE SERVICE SWITCH ASM,ENG COOL TEMP IND: Automotive Amazon.com: ACDelco 213-4793 ACDELCO OE SERVICE SWITCH ASM,ENG COOL TEMP IND: Automotive

Sorry, but I can't seem to get good results out of the editor here -- it's behaving strangely and messing up my posts.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Let me repeat the main remaining question since it's hard to see it above where the editor removed my paragraph delineations: will deleting these sensors while I wait for the new sensors to arrive interfere with passing smog?

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

these parts do not connect to the computer

you will pass smog but your engine will overheat.
because your coolant fan won't turn on.

& your temp gage won't work

perhaps you need a better source for parts.

the coolant temp sensor for ECM input is usually mounted to the intake manifold.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Thank you, guys, you have really improved my life here.

I may try grounding that passenger-side wire to see if it will turn the fan on. I installed an aftermarket electric fan years ago that I think may use air temperature instead of coolant temperature, thereby avoiding that sensor, but your input will lead me to pay special attention to making the fan work while awaiting sensors.

Yes, the parts store situation, in fact the entire car-hobbyist situation on the West side of Los Angeles is dire. Almost the only place you see hobbyist cars is in a dealership in Santa Monica which recycles cars to collectors. If you have a good oldish car outside, there are always people leaving notes trying to buy them to feed dealers like this. Once in the hands of collectors, they seem stay almost exclusively indoors because anything other than fairly recent cars or heaps are vanishingly rare on the streets.

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

Odd I was in CA 2 years ago our hotel was in El Segundo, but we went all over; San Diego, Santa Monica, Hollywood, Beverly, Naples, etc.

Frankly I was impressed with the amount of old iron still on the streets, I explained to my kids that because of the nice weather is CA cars last forever.

We even went to Van Nuys one Saturday to a car show. The hobby looked alive and well to me.

the problem with most all parts store is most of the workers know absolutely anything about cars let alone the parts they are selling and if you don't have the right desciption or part # in their computer they have no clue how or bother to check.

I remember as a youth the parts guy knew what parts you needed and made sure of it...

Re: '88 305 temp sensor 1-wire to 2-wire conversion

I rarely go East of Bundy any more but it's not happening on the Westside. South Bay yes, I think so, and Van Nuys Blvd. must draw people from some distance still -- in the seventies it drew people from Ventura to South Bay and from as far as Pomona or Riverside for cruise nights but not only did the cops shut the main scene down, but the traffic got too heavy for people to drive as far for that.

The demographics and residential space requirements on the Westside don't conduce to car hobbyists any more. I'm here every day, and don't see good old cars except for one non-restored Studebaker wagon down the street and a neighbor who keeps a surfer wagon in his garage. You do see some exotic European cars now and then and there's the old car shop in Santa Monica. There's an annual show in Beverly Hills that draws out Leno and the like with great cars but that's not Westside. Pomona and thereabouts seems to have some car culture but the kid scene is more gang than car now, if I understand correctly. But I expect there's some car stuff from Anaheim to Pomona and Riverside. I think there is at least one hot rod shop around Burbank/Pasadena, and I expect there must be something around Huntington Beach and Long Beach -- I think there are still car shows in Long Beach, and there used to be stuff like a kart shop and a speedway specialist, but the traffic keeps me from going there any more.

PCH in Malibu, and parts of Mulhullond Drive probably still get some cruisers because it's the only place to cruise to from around here and a destination for people from some distance. I suppose that if you hung out at Neptune's Net at county line near the Northwest end of Malibu on a warm weekend, you'd see a few interesting cars -- there seem to be plenty of Harleys around then.

Seriously, I've lived here most all of my life, and it's really rare to see an interesting car on the Westside any more. There's an O'Reilly's, the closest Pep Boys is now West LA, and that's entirely it for chain car shops. There are still some bike shops on Lincoln Blvd. in South Santa Monica and Venice.

I know this is an old thread but I have not been able to find the button head style for my gauge sensor. Any ideas or do I have to change the wire connector?

Thanks for the quick response, the female spade snapped onto the green wire clip and the temp gauge is working no issues.

Thanks again for the correct part numbers too!
