What kind of distributor cap is this?

I picked up a GM HEI dist from a guy and he said it had MSD internals. There is no coil in the cap, just an empty cap and a coil wire mount. Am I correct in assuming he was running an external coil and probably some kind of ignition box for a tach since there are only 2 wires on the dist? I have attached some pics to give you guys a better idea of what I have. I wont be running an ignition box, so should I get a rebuild kit with an ignition module and a coil in cap?

Oh, yeah, that's clearly been converted over for use with an ignition amplifier box and an external coil. Notice there is no module or condenser inside the body any more- just the mag pickup. And the external tower on the "convert a cap" is where you attach the coil wire from than external coil.

It's pretty grungy inside. I would check to make sure both the centrifugal and vacuum advance mechanisms are working before you throw any money or time into it.

I found a rebuild kit on summit with those parts for under $100.
