Low Idle Problem, Squeaky Belt, Unknown Sensors

Hey!

Short version of a long story: I took my '91 Z28 5.7L apart five years ago, and just put it back together.

I'm almost done getting into driving condition with the exception of a couple problems.

1. Car idles low and dies without tending the gas pedal
2. Squeaky Belt
3. Have two unknown sensors

Here are the details:

1. Car idles low and dies. (Squeaky belt can be heard also)

When the car is completely cold, it will not start, or idle without a little gas. Once it is warmed up a little (As it is in the video) it will idle without help, but extremely low. However, it still won't start without gas, even when it's warm.

Also, this JUST started happening. I've had the car together for about a month without this problem.

2. Squeaky belt.

I took off the A.I.R. pump and installed a brand new belt (From the sticky). The belt now squeaks. It will stop briefly when lubricated with a bar of soap, but then continue squeaking. Also, when the car is warm (140+ degrees) it will stop squeaking AT IDLE. But any RPM above idle, and the squeak will return.

I believe it is a bad alternator bearing, but I would like suggestions.

3. Unknown Sensors

Where do these go? I can't find anywhere to plug them in.

Sensor 1 Location: Driver's side just below both fuel lines.

Sensor 2 Location: Passenger's side, next to firewall. Directly beside the hood light connections. This connector is identical to the hood light connectors.

Re: Low Idle Problem, Squeaky Belt, Unknown Sensors

An update on this.

1. Fixed low idle by replacing the IAC.
2. Temporarily fixed the squeaky belt by coating it with Armor All Interior Protectant. I can hear the squeak wanting to come back, however. Maybe I got a dud belt.
3. Still unsure of these connectors. Anyone know where they belong?

Re: Low Idle Problem, Squeaky Belt, Unknown Sensors

Another update:

1. Idle is fine, car runs great!
2. The squeak did in fact return. After measuring my serpentine setup again, I landed at almost exactly 96.8" (Smog pump delete). I bought a new belt just in case. I used MasterPro K060962 96-3/4".

I then drove the car all over town, out to the country, and back for about three hours last night with no belt squeal. Then, I could hear it start coming back only when I turned my steering wheel. It consistently got louder during turns and then developed into a the same full-blown squeal I had before, even without turning the steering wheel. The entire time, my tensioner was at the three indicator marks and wasn't flexing.

Also, when I would turn from a stop sign and floor the car, the power steering would cut out.

It has to be a tensioner, correct? I would suspect the power steering pulley, but there's no reason the power steering pulley would quit squealing for three hours just because of a new belt. But then again, the tensioner always stays in the ideal operating range. I'm a bit stumped on this one.

Would love some input on this!

3. Still have no idea where these sensor plug into. Would love some input on this, also.

Bump, still stuck on these.

My belt squeals all the time. When I replace the belt, it will stop squealing for about 50 miles. Then it will start to squeal when turning, and then slowly evolve into a full-blown squeal at all times, that worsens when I turn. Is this a tension problem? Power steering problem?

Thanks!

Re: Low Idle Problem, Squeaky Belt, Unknown Sensors

sensor 1 is your o2 sensor, sensor 2 is your coolant sensor in the side of the head. Try resestting your TPS for your idle and no cold start issue.

Test your pulleys. pull the belt off. And shake and spin the pulleys by hand. If something is seized or wobbles. Its your problem. Check your power steering fluid level. You said you hear it while turning now. So I'd focus on the power steering pump and pulley. If you think its your tensioner than just buy one. They are like 18 dollars.

Nice, thanks! I'll see if I can get the sensors figured out tonight. As for the idle, I solved it by replacing the IAC

Yeah, tested the pulleys, no noise by hand. Power steering fluid is fresh and full, but still not convinced it's working correctly.

Where did you get a tensioner for $18? That's usually what shipping costs. http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...parttype,11659

Oh you're talking about the pulley, I'm talking about the entire tensioner. I'm not sure the tensioner pulley would have stopped squealing just because I changed my belt. Not sure.
