engine paint

i don't know if this is the right place for this or not, but when i do go through rebuilding my new engine i plan to paint it gm corporate blue. what i'm worried about is if i use the "1000* ceramic engine paint" (vht rattle can) or the like, that it'll just be flaking off this time next year. what i was wondering is if there is a more permanent way of painting an engine? powdercoat the block?

Re: engine paint

I use standard automotive primer and regular enamel. the outside of your engine shouldn't get much above 220 degrees- except very close to the manifolds. The paint has worked for me for years. painted lots of engines with it. I only use the ultra high temp stuff for headers or manifolds

Re: engine paint

Ive used regular 500 degree engine paint and it never xame off. You can powder coat the block. But whoever does it make sure they use crushed walnut to sandblast it with. Cuz youdont want small pieces of metel or sand in your motor where you cant get it out of or cant see . Walnut is soft and wobt hurt anything and will burn away

i use a wire brush on a drill....if there's rust you can use some muriatic acid ( hardware store) in a spray bottle- when the rust runs off spray it with water, then blow it dry. Starter fluid is also great for washing off any oil residue.

Re: engine paint

I used POR15 Engine Enamel on my motor. I have about 15k miles on it and it still looks like the day I painted it. They don't have a GM corp blue but they have a Chrysler blue that is pretty close and that is what this is.

I also painted my 461 Pontiac with it.

Re: engine paint

appreciate all the helpful input, i wouldn't have guess you could use primer on the engine because, well i never have lol. guess i'll just do a really good job of cleaning it up before i prime and paint then, standard spray enamel is okay to use?

Re: engine paint

spray can enamel is ok, BUT i have found that the lighter colors tend to absorb grease and oil stains as time goes by. i like a gloss two part paint such as enamel with a hardener...stays clean for more years.
