Fuel pump replaced only starts with starting fluid
Hello everyone,
I need some advice from you guys, I replaced a Bosch fuel pump from Napa. Changed the hoses from the fuel lines. Now the car hardly starts. It starts only with starting fluid. It runs fine afterwards. But as soon as I turn it off, I can't start it again without starting fluid. What is the next thing I should check?
Thanks,

Check the fuel pressure. A good gauge is worth it's weight in gold working on any modern fuel injected engine.

Yeah I did check the fuel pressure, its like next to nothing. When I turned the key the needle just barely move. Is that bad news? I really hope its not the fuel pump. It took me 3-4 months to install everything back together.

when you turn the key on without starting it you should be able to hear the pump prime for a few seconds, if you do not, that is the problem. doubt it would be the pump, ( "usually" pump wouldn't work ever than) check connectors and wires to the pump for continuity etc. or look in the forums for a test procedure for priming circuit. Is this the reason you changed the pump? same symptom? or is this a new issue after replacement. Just some questions to ask to help isolate the issue.

Re: Fuel pump replaced only starts with starting fluid
It all started last summer when I decided to change the fuel filter. What I did was followed the chilton's manual, pulled the fp fuse out after I started the car. removed the fuel filter, let the gas drain out, then replaced the fuel filter. That caused the fuel pump to not prime and it died. So after 4 months, I dropped the tank, exhaust, replaced the fuel pump and hoses from the tank. Now the car has a hard time starting. when I turn the key, I can hear the pump prime, but its not as loud as the older pump. but now I can't start the car without starting fluid.

A new one shouldn't be as loud as a old one.
the fact it starts on spray and then runs indicates that every thing fuel related is working correctly
You possibly may not to be getting the signal to the computer to spray the injectors when the engine is
being cranked over ; a elec problem

Re: Fuel pump replaced only starts with starting fluid
I have had an issue like this before but with tbi, so I do not know exactly if can be related, but, bad temp sensor (on tbi) can cause same symptoms. I had fuel, spark, etc etc, but no start. replaced temp sensor, (not the one wire sensor for the gauge) sprayed with start fluid and kept fluttering the throttle till rpms started increasing and it slowly started running better and better. once it cleared out it has ran like a top since. temp sensor was acting like a choke in a way only it was controlling injection. again, this is for tbi, so I cant say for sure without research if this would qualify for tpi ,
