Small Body To Big Body In Car Distributor Swap

I at first bought a DUI Small Body distributor, which was claimed to be Made in the USA, wrong. It was Made in China and would start to miss fire at 4000 RPM if punched. I called Memphis Performance distributors up and gave them so much crap they sent me a brand new Big Body DUI Distributor that is Made in the USA . So we did a in car swap.

New Big Body

We first marked where the number one cylander was on the Small body in the car and then turned the New Distributor rotar till the lines were close to lineing up. Once we started to pull the Old Distributor out, as the gear turned (because its helical) we marked how far it turned. As seen in the third picture.

Then we turned the new Distributor till it was lined up with the second mark on the old Distributor (The mark that was made as the Distributor was pulled out). As you set the new distributor down in place the rotor should spin back to the first mark. When it is in place set the end play on the shaft. When that is set put the gasket in and set her down for the final time and then hook up the rest of the spark plug wires.

Here is a pick of it in.

As you can see there is almost no space between the aircleaner and distributor, which is the first reason we use a small body, also there is about a half a inch between the firewall.

Just an FYI. I realize that a lot of you know how to do this but, for those that don't my son though he might help out. We also needed to get a picture of the car in!
The "small body” distributor is made in China no matter who you buy it from. The boy's at DUI fixed us up though. Many thanks to them for stepping up and backing their product. As was stated I was really po'd about the distributor. We pulled it on the dyno all day long and couldn't get it to run without breaking up under load at about 4000 rpm and up. It was so bad at 5000 we didn't pull it past that. Though it made 475 hp, there was definitely an issue with misfiring. The last straw was a Magneto out of a sprint car and it pulled well on the dyno. We got a good pull and it made well over 500 HP with a brake specific around .48. Nice motor! As this was my son’s first build he was very disappointed. We sent the distributor back to DUI and they said they changed some things out but couldn't find anything wrong. Confident that DUI had fixed our problem, the motor went in. With the small body we had lots of clearance. It still did it. BIG disappointment now! Excited to hear it roar I called DUI. They promptly sent me the large body made in the USA. Took it out and punched it and it was awesome. My son was so happy he sent in the post to change from a small to a large body for anyone who had trouble. It was a good experience for him. The moral of the story is currently ALL THE SMALL BODY DISTRIBUTERS that you see out there come from CHINA. Don't buy them. There is many ways and persons who will custom build you a small body. The big names MSD, DUI, Summit etc. small bodies are made in China.

Re: Small Body To Big Body In Car Distributor Swap

Hi Bob.
Just thought I'd say thanks for this info. I am thinking I am going to have to do the disty swap soon as well, so this will help lots.

I'm guessing the carb needs to come off to be able to do this?

Re: Small Body To Big Body In Car Distributor Swap

Believe it or not you actually have the room. Don't get me wrong.... man your ribs are black and blue from reaching in there!

I am not sure with the factory carb but you get a much better look. Id’ pull the carb. I don't know what carb or manifold you are running but, mine is a Holly 750 D. P. HP. The manifold is the IMSA approved Weiand X-CELerator. It is not that tough for me to pull the Holley. If you have a carb, and it sounds like you do, I would pull it and the linkage bracket. Be careful of the T.V cable (if you have one) don't accidently change the adjustment. If you do readjusting is not tough. Tape all the holes shut! With all that out of the way you are going to lift and then tilt the Distributor to the front. As it comes up and it clears the cam and lifter valley in the block you can tilt it quite a bit. Surprisingly everything just goes together. You will have to pull the wires and cap first and, re-install them with the dist. in. So mark them. If you are ditching one of the Chinese small bodies get ready for an unbelievable change in the way it runs. It will start much quicker sound much better and easily zing to red line without a hitch. The Boy's at Davis Unified Ignition do an awesome job on the large bodies and they have for a long time.

Re: Small Body To Big Body In Car Distributor Swap

Sounds great! The carb that's on it right now is from an Australian V8 from the late 70's. So i might even swap that out as well as the dizzy. Any recommendations as to a good combo of carb and dizzy?

Cheers.

Re: Small Body To Big Body In Car Distributor Swap

Here I go. This is my opinion. I am running these products on a Dyno proven 383 stroker motor. Very nice heads 525+ HP. I definitely would never buy any Distributor from any one besides Davis Unified Ignition. ( D.U.I.). Very nice parts. If you do one, he will set it up based on what you tell him about your motor and driving habits. They will then set it up with a custom curve for you. There is an unmistakable difference in the way your vehicle will respond to the Davis. One ignition wire hook up and it has a tach hook up and, an internal rev limiter is now available. 7500 rpm on the Dyno and in the car. Not a hiccup. DO NOT BUY THE SMALL BODIES FROM ANYONE BUT A SELECT FEW! They are Chinese junk. They’re everywhere. MSD, DUI stick with the DUI H.E.I. and call or email him about what you have. Same with the carb. The Carb is also a peeve of mine. I have run A.E.D. carburetors for a long time. They got their start in NASCAR and have done well. Go straight to AED. Tell them everything especially the cam and weight of your car. Stick or Auto and intake manifold he needs to know everything. Finally, I wouldn’t trade my Weiand XCELerator for anything. It is awesome. Good bottom with very high horsepower possibilities. Unbelivable when you see how low it is. Fits with a Holly and 14” x 3” air cleaner under a stock hood..

Good Luck Mate,
These guys won’t let you down.
