Fuel leak under left headlight

I have been experiencing fuel leaking from under the left head light on the drivers side below my vacuum canister and charcoal canister. I had just filled my tank up when this began and I had been experiencing strong gas fumes. My car began running rough and dying on me as a result the gas leak u believe because my gas gauge began to read low. Does any one have any knowledge for this problem theyd be willing to share with me? Any hints things I should look for?

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

Took off my vacuum canister and vapor canister everything looked normal from what I could tell. Went for a ride with a fire extinguisher next to me and got some gas drove it around and parked it and no gas leak. So I'm just going to get some diagnostics done and see where I'm at from there.

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

Two things come to mind. One is that the charcoal canister is never purging. Shouldn't leak gas regardless, but it should definitely be on the short list of things to check.

Second is that the tank vent isn't working. On a 3rd gen it's a separate pressure relief valve near the front of the fuel tank (not built into the fuel cap like most cars). They are notorious for failing on 3rd gens.

A vent line from the tank to the charcoal canister should NEVER have liquid fuel in it, even if those two things are wacked. It goes in at the top of the tank and has baffling around it so liquid fuel shouldn't be able to slosh into it. Apparently it did in your case. A massive over-fill of the tank, perhaps? I dunno. But I run around all the time in cars that have that vent line from the tank wide open under the hood (or extended up in front of the radiator with a little tiny K&N filter on it) and I never get more than the tinyest whiff of gas vaports from it, let alone liquid fuel.

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

I have over filled it once i wouldn't say it was a massive over fill tho. Less than a gallon I think. I can not speak for the PO as I only purchased this car about 5 months ago. Something is up with my tank also I was trying to figure our why my tank would only allow about six gallons before the pump would click off. I was not sure if my tank would take more so I tried to add more and had to fight the pump to make it keep pumping. I kept pumping and the pump kept clicking off this was the only time I over filled my tank and this took place about a month prior to my gas leaking experience. I realize I probably need a new tank which I plan on replacing with a 91 or 92 Camaro gas tank.

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

I purchased a new purge valve should be here in 2 days and I will install it then. My check engine light is on so I plan on running the codes and see where that leads me. Also my radiator fans have not been kicking on Idk if that has anything to do with it. If the new purge valve does not fix it I will buy a new canister solanoid. And lastly I will replace my charcoal canister bc it is the most expensive of the parts. Also my charcoal canister has a purge valve that is built on top of the canister so that is why I might replace it. Other than that Idk what to look for... Also I will have someone check my fuel lines for leaks. I have been driving my car the past 2 days and have not been having any gas leaks so Idk how we will be able to find the leak if its not leaking but I need to find it before it comes back.

I will keep you posted with my finding. Thank you for your help Damon I really appreciate your help I realize how odd this all sounds and I am still learning so please forgive my mechanical ignorance if I sounded dumb I apologize in advance. I'm just assuming it has something to do with my vacuum system because of the location of the leak (under my left headlight below the charcoal canister and vacuum canister).

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

more than a reply is this question that I have and I couldnt understand this website yet. I have a 1988 camaro z28 and I had a case in which my car started leaking fuel from the charcoal canister located at the front of the engine. I changed the gas pump, gas sensors, fuel filter the one that runs from the tank to the engine. My car started leaking a lot of gas from the charcoal canister after i replace the gas pump, but when I released the pressure from the tank by taking off the gas cap it will stop leaking. My question is do i need to replace the whole charcoal canister?
or what could be wrong with it? if i do need to replace this part, where can i find it?
I really need to get this car fixed, please help.

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

check to make sure the fuel vent line (the one leading to the cannister) and the fuel return line haven't been switched during the pump swap. Just ask me how I know... lol

Re: Fuel leak under left headlight

Well I went out to my dads to test the check engine light hoping it would lead me to my fuel leak problem. He taught me how to use the OBD 1. The first time we checked they read:

24- Vehicle speed sensor
34- Vacuum sensor circut
36- MAF sensor burn-off relay

We then put a new purge valve and reconnected all the hoses. We unhooked the battery for a fee minutes and then reconnected battery. I then went to Orileys to return a part I ended up not needing in the car. Check engine light came in immediatly after leaving my dads house. When i got back we tested it again using OBD 1. The only code that was still coming up was:

36- MAF sensor burn-off relay

Can anyone tell me how to correct this problem code 36 MAF sensor burn-off relay?

As of now I am considering my fuel leak as an over fill at the pump. I might have topped it off I'm not quite sure I know I was going to be taking it in a trip so I might have bc I was going a ways. I'm not too sure. It has not been leaking fuel anymore I tested the the waters rode around with a fire extinguisher for a bit and have determined the leak has vanished. Until further notice of course. But I have been driving it around quite a bit and the problem has not persisted. I am now dealing with a radiator cooling issue as well. My dad tested both fans along with fan relays and both are good. We could get one fan to run only with OBD 1 in. It was strange I obviously have some electrical issue and I am going to have to drop my car off at my neighbors who does elecrical as a profession. Hopefully he can make sense of it. Unfortunatly probably won't be able to drop it off til next weekend. So night driving and very short day trips for me till I get the cooling issue resolved.

Back to the subject can any one help me with check engine light code 36 MAF sensor burn-off relay? How do I correct this code?
