Sock in gas tank for mechanical pump?

Im getting ready to swap out my gas tank and i have a mechanical fuel pump but I can't figure out where to pick up a sock for the gas tank for my 84 firebird. All the stores I called said they only sell them for electric fuel pumps. I know theres a filter/strainer in there but where do I get it?!?

The one wire sending units? I see the tubes for it but nothing to filter it out. Am I just thinking this wrong?

The "sending unit" is the whole assy that goes inside the tank. Has the filter on it.

Re: Sock in gas tank for mechanical pump?

The only ones I can find are 1970-1981 and 85-92, they dont have any for 82-84. Im wondering if the 85-92 would work as long as its carb'd? I know the wiring would have to be customized to go to the tail light harness instead of the harness behind the seat but that wouldnt take me long.

www.rockauto.com

They're like $5 on there. Granted you have to pay shipping and you'll have to wait for the part to be delivered, but with some things, it's one of the few places that will carry stuff like that.

Re: Sock in gas tank for mechanical pump?

Interesting. I've fought that off and on for 30 years now.

Good to know that they're available.

Got that ordered along with a rust free tank and a new lock ring/gasket. I'll have a whole new fuel system basically when this is done lol.
