Head porting books?

As the title says, do any of you know of a well detailed book on how to port vortec heads? I thought David Vizard had one?! If he did, what book of his did he have the write up in? thanks guys!

Yeah he wrote a book in '99 about building SBCs on a budget. I've got it somewhere around here. He talks about porting heads in it and does talk about vortecs. Although I recall that he concluded there was little to gain because they flow pretty well in stock form.

As a side note his books rock!

This is the one it's in:

What we found out for yrs and yrs and yrs,we have got it wrong with the free-hand die grinders. That the only true way to be sure each port is matched is threw a programed 5 position CNC porting. And we also found what makes Vortec's is the rough surface.

its 5 Axis CNC porting and most here are young first time 3rd gen owners that cant afford automated CNC porting at a shop so they learn to do it themselves.

Re: Head porting books?

All true...There is a thread about 50pages long where some guys have had great success porting the vortecs. If you type in "Dirt Reynolds vortec" under google you can find it. I believe its Nastyz28.com. Lots of good info there just no pics or details. I wish there was someone closer to me that knew how to port them properly with a flowbench. I would love to learn how

Thanks for the word Axis.Senior moment.Main reason behind CNC's was the best case we found a hand ported port didn't get-er-done..We did a heat probe test on each exhaust port and found more than 25% difference port to port that was done by a expert porter. And again, what makes Vortec's special and work like they do is the rough intake port.Smoother exhaust ports on the other hand did show improvements.
