Hey all, my 89 iroc z lb9 is having some issues. I was unable to bring it back from my fathers house (30 minutes drive from where i stay) so one day he was driving it on the freeway and it was running perfect. Then when he got on the off ramo and stopped at a red light she started idling really rough and the temp. gauge got above 220. I just took her around my neighborhood for maybe 10 minutes max and just like that the temp needle started creeping up pretty quick. It didnt idle rough but it was getting very hot. Theres no oil in any of the coolant radiator fluids good overflow is nice and green. Really hoping it isnt going to be a head gasket. I pray its only a thermostat but if anyone has any information to soothe my madness id really appreciate it. Thanks everybody

Well, you could start by checking for any blown fuses or connections that might have came loose. Check the fan connections and coolant temp sensor connections. Could also be a bad temp sensor or a stuck thermostat.

im hoping its a thermostat my dad thinks it may be a bad head gasket. the previous owner gave me the old paper work and it already has had a head replaced on it and that was at 60k now its at 118k im just hoping its only a thermostat

id definatly start with the thermostat, and go from there. hopefully its nothing major.

Ive been having overheating problems with my car since i bought it. Check the thermostat (ive gone through about 6 now) never go with failsafe either they are a piece of sh*t!!! Put in a normal 195 and its good now. Also check the fan switch the heads, passenger side. I replaced mine with a cooler one, 210 i believe it comes on. Make sure all connections are good, no burnt wires or connectors. Might need to replace the radiator hoses especially the lower which seems to collapse more, and it might be time for a new radiator cap. All in all if that doesnt work might need new head gaskets. My car is old and everything was originall with 150,000+ miles, those babies were shot! lol My car runs fine now though!!

If it isn't leaking the rad cap is fine, I would replace the tstat with a 180 due to the climate in kentucky and also check your fan motors, fuses, and fan switch.

Just because its not leading doesn't mean its not bad..it could still not be holding pressure and plus its really cheap like 6 bucks. Fixed my problem when we first attacked it but then parts just started going out from there. Also turn on the a/c if the fan comes on you know the fan, motor, relay and fuses are good. Then check the rad fan switch. Could be old and shot. Go from there then. If you get a 180 thermostat make sure to get a fan switch that comes on cooler.

the a/c fan is different from the coolant fan. Hook both motors up to a power source (battery works fine) with a positive and negative wire to check the motors. The fan switch is located on the underside of the block on the passenger side near the starter it should have a single wire going to it.
