Vortec info

I figured I would post up some of the tech info from my current engine since there isn't a lot of information beyond stock vortec heads. I'm upgrading to the AFR Vortec 912's. I did a lot of searching before purchasing them and could not find any information anywhere besides that they exist. This post will be picture heavy. Also I'd like to keep this post strictly technical, any questions about how it ran/improved send me a pm. If I get enough questions about that I'll start a different post.

The old setup pertained of stock 906 vortec heads, and a Holley/Weiand Stealth Ram 7542. The intake ports on the stealth ram are pretty small, even compared to the 906 heads. Here are some pics showing the ports with the GM 89017465 gasket.

Stock 906 ports

AFR 912

Currently I have the HSR at the shop to be ported to match the gaskets, once I get it back I will post pictures.

Re: Vortec info

What gasket is that? I bought Fel Pros for my vortecs, and I don't like them. They are over 1/8" thick and the port openimgs don't line up.

Re: Vortec info

It's a GM gasket p/n 89017465. Its their latest revision, I did a lot of searching because of all the issues they had with them. Most people had the least problems with the latest GM gasket. Worked great for me for two years, and they are reusable.

I think those are the better gaskets. They should squish down when tightened, if, they are the the ones I'm thinking about..

Re: Vortec info

I also used the ARP bolts over the GM bolts. There are a couple different fel pro gaskets too, Did you get the problem solver ones with the metal core?

Re: Vortec info

No, these are just thick dark gray paper. 1255 maybe? I'll have to check the part number, but it was one that kept getting recommended on nastyz28.

Those are the ones I was thinking about. The vortec gaskets are quite a bit thicker than the regular sbc intake gaskets.

Re: Vortec info

Thats the nicer fel pro, the 1255's I've heard have a lot of issues. Could be people over torqing them, I have no experience with them though. The latest fel pro and gm have metal bracing around the bolt holes so they can't be over torqued.

Re: Vortec info

These are the gaskets I've used. I even reused this particular set for like... at least 4 different manifold installations before I replaced it. I had a junk set of heads, then replaced those, got a cracked block, and a few other things, but I had the intake on and off several times before the motor was in its current state, and although the motor had problems each time there was never any evidence of any intake gasket leaks. This particular time was the time my cylinder wall in my .060 over block cracked...

I loved these gaskets, super easy to work with. Pretty sure they're Fel Pro, but they may be GM.

Re: Vortec info

Those look like my GM gaskets, the new style fel pro has the metal blockoff plate between the intake ports, the GM has the three windows. Funny you have red "o" rings in the gasket, mine are black. Can you get any numbers off of them?

Maybe they are GM... I last saw them around 3 years ago when the engine decided it felt like staying together.

But Ive had great luck with them as far as sealing, even after repeated uses on different heads. What was "wrong" with the earlier revisions?

Update, AFR moved the accessory bolt holes on the heads. The early non serpentine power steering brackets won't work.

Car is running and it is running well! If it wasn't the cold season I'd get some ET's. The car definitely feels like it picked up some but right now it is hard to quantify.
