Car diesels on 89 octane when hot?

First the basics... 1983 LG4 all stock.
Was running 87 octane when I first bought it, then the idle started getting high after running in stop and go traffic (about 1500 in park, 1000 in D), also started diesling unless I left it in gear. Switched to 89 octane and it went away for about a month. Now it's back. Idle isnt as high (about 1200 parked, 800 in gear), but it still diesels a bit after running in stop and go traffic. It also has a little harder time on a cold start, takes 3 pumps and some throttle play to keep it runnign for the first 20 seconds or so, then its good.

Temp guage stays low, about 160 or so, but I dont know that it's accurate. The motor smells hot after my 40 minute ride home and I have a found a tiny amount of coolant on top of my intake manifold. It's never spit any fluid out like blowing steam everywhere or anything. Fan seems to running ok (its a clutch setup, not electric)

The car runs great otherwise.

Is this more of a heat issue, or should I check my timing? The car doesnt ping under load, but does hesitate slightly when cold and cuts out randomly while holding a constant throttle position for more than 30 seconds.

check plugs the rest of the ignition system and timing. have you made any changes to the fuel system or ignition at all?

I did just redo the plugs last month. This was in hopes to elminate the cold running cutout (which has happened since I bought the car) I will have to talk with my neighbor to borrow his timing light and check that. Other than plugs and fuel octane, I have made no changes to it.

Re: Car diesels on 89 octane when hot?

Im pretty sure I do. I got the number from the Haynes Manual I have. I know the plugs I got arent exactly the greatest (Bosch Platinum+2) But at the time of changing them, I didnt have a ton of choices.

The actual number on them matched what I pulled out and the size and shape (minus the extra electrode) all matched as well. The old plugs were in decent shape, just blackened on the white insulator, but the electrodes were all a normal chocolate color.

My god I really dont want to go through changing them again. My arms are finally healed from the cuts and bruising from doing it the last time.... lol. I will say I did manange to get all 8 done from the top of the car without going under it.

I wont say that the plugs are the cause of your dieseling issue, but those plugs are junk. The factory AC Delco would be far better and may help. Along with rechecking your timing, be sure that the engine's idle is not set above stock.

Also look for vacuum leaks.

Re: Car diesels on 89 octane when hot?

Ok, well I finally got some help on checking the timing. It was at 4 degrees instead of 6. We will see how it fairs on a test drive tomorrow (too late tonight to do it)

Way I see it one of 2 things will happen... it get better or it will get worse.
