383 build input needed

hey guys i was wondering if i could get some input on my list so far. Here's what i got so far, also all parts are from jegs so i'll give pn's if you wana look em up.

138-BP3830 383 4-bolt/Flat top pistons short block from blue print engines

723-2168 aluminum vortec heads 185cc w/2.02" intake valves from patriot performance

220-9-3100 double roller timing chain from cloyes

249-19002-16 sb-chevy 1.6 ratio roller rockers from comp cams

where id really like some extra input is what i should go with as far as
vibration dampner
cam and lifters
what length push rods

and last im plannin on runnin the the weiand 144 series blower, as far as oil pan and stuff im not to worried about yet as i wana make sure that main parts will all work together. Money isnt a huge concern, i wana get the block within a few months and i go on deployment next year so when i get back i should be able to get it together pretty quick.

Re: 383 build input needed

Will that blower fit vortec heads? Other than that concern, I'd get a mild blower friendly cam, and keep rpms below 6k. Flat top pistons however usually yeild 11 to 1 compression with 64cc heads. Make sure you get large chambered heads to keep compression below 10 to 1 with a blower or else you will need race gas.

Somewhere around 9.5 to 1 would be ok, and maybe 10 with decent sized cam and low boost. That may still run ok on pump gas. Alittle lower than 10 to 1 compression would be better tho. Safer that way.

Pushrods you will have to measure on the assembled motor.

Re: 383 build input needed

well from what i read those heads come with the bolt holes for both vortec and non vortec intakes but the vortec ones fit better so if i had to match the heads to the blower intake that wouldnt be to big of an issue.for heads the only ones i can find at the moment bigger than 64cc is the edelbrock aluminum pre 87 heads at 70cc, but it says it has the 87 and up intake bolt pattern so it should work with the blower well, they're a lot more pricy but i wana make sure this thing will run right thats why im checkin here. the part number for the edelbrock heads from jegs is 350-60759

If you can get the 383 with dished pistons, i'd do that.

they actually do have the same 383 listed with .200 domed pistons for the same price, would that work?

domed will give you even more compression.

Re: 383 build input needed

yeah, dome is for higher compression. You want inversed dome, or "dished" design, or flat top with larger head CC chambers. 76cc or so would work. 74cc would give 9.9 to 1 on most flat tops which is ok for a few lbs of boost on a good tune with a carbed car.

Thats with the .200 dome pistons. Look for one with flattops with 75-76cc heads or go with dished pistons.

Re: 383 build input needed

yea, thats w/ the domes. check the 3830 shortblock. 9.2.1 compression w/ 76cc heads. about perfect for a supercharger/blower. if you go to the weiand site, there is lots of info about using theyre superchargers, compression recomendations, & carb mods you will need to do. you might also want to check & see if that will work with your accesories. might need to go back to v-belts?

Re: 383 build input needed

well after doin a lot of reading this is what ive found, the desired boost for a street car is 12:1, this is wahat you dont wana exceed including your stock cr. so a 9.0:1 cr is best to have about 5lbs of boost and a 9.5:1 cr is about 4. like you said the 383 with 76cc heads would have a 9.21:1 cr. So the the weiand 142 comes with 3.05" drive pulley and 6 inch lower pulley and after using their equation i found right ou of the box id be makin 3.98lbs of boost which should be perfect for street driving. if wanted for track runs a 2.86" drive pulley would put me at 5.21lbs of boost. also the 142 blower im lookin at is made for vortec heads so as long as i can find 76cc vortecs i think i got the head and blower part figured out. Now as for a cam im going to want a longer duration cam with out to much scavenging correct?

Re: 383 build input needed

The boost charts dont exactly work in real life...i'm at 9 to 1 and have hit 18psi on pump gas, which would put my compression somewhere off the charts But it worked.

I would say, run 5psi minimum or else you wont really feel the effects of the blower. 5-6psi you start to feel some power.

For a cam you dont need too much duration, since you dont have to turn over 6K to make power. That bottom end will last longer sub 6K rpm. I'd say put in something around 224 deg and be happy with it. Put about 10 deg split on it for the blower and it should work out well.

Re: 383 build input needed

so i think im gonna skip the blower for now, i still wana build a mean 383 though. i still plan on using the bp(blueprint) shortblock 383 w/forged internals or the gm 383 shortblock, both have dished pistons. The cc of the dish for the bp is 12cc dish and gm doesnt say. the heads i wana use are gm iron vortec head http://www.jegs.com/i/GM+Performance...34446/10002/-1 it has a 65cc chamber and i think that'd give me about 10.1:1 cr? i could be way off lol but i could get away with that by running premium correct? Next i wana run a comp xtreme energy cam http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp+Cams/249/SK11-433-8/10002/-1 the lift is .521 intake and .540 exhaust, i wana run 1.6:1 roller rockers so the cam lift would really be roughly .558 intake and .576 exhaust? Thats also the reason i want those heads is they're pre machined to allow up to .600" of lift. I just wana make sure this makes sense and could work, if more info is needed let me know. Thanks!

just love to see the expression on your face when you try to install a 454 big block cam you linked too in that 383

something like this roller cam makes more sense if your building a really hot 383 sbc, but vortec head won,t keep up and you better do a bit more research

these links should help

Oops this is the cam i meant http://www.jegs.com/i/Comp-Cams/249/...oductId=754881 the cam specs you posted look good as well. Also those vortecs are supposed to flow 281cfm @ .600" if that aint enough whats a better choice head?

Yeah those are the large port heads...they will be ok. Keep comp around 10 to 1 or lower with iron heads.

Re: 383 build input needed

Vortecs arent ideal for 383's but they're definitely workable. Just dont put a cam in it that will pull to 6000+ RPM's in a 383. The vortecs just can't support that kind of RPM on that many cubes. They'll still make amazing power up to 5500 RPMs or so with a nice roller cam. But just dont count on a big cam with a high-winding power band working well with them. Keep the cam on the mild-medium side for a 383 with Vortecs.

If you can do something better, do it, but if you're stuck with Vortecs you can make them work.

at least look at these before ordering your heads

Flow data. Flows some air for a 210cc as cast head. Valve job with some clean up only.. Intake only.
