Oil Drain Plug Leak

I have a very slow leak from the oil drain plug and need suggestions for the best sealer to use at my next oil change.

Re: Oil Drain Plug Leak

Make sure you didn't strip the bolt and if so, fix it. Either get one of those rubber expanding plugs, over sized plug, or re-tap the hole to fit a bigger plug.

Check the pan for cracks.

Re: Oil Drain Plug Leak

Thanks ...No cracks. I will go with the washer to stop that drain plug leak. It is like a small drop when the oil gets hot. Oil level stay full, (so how drops in a quart of oil?) it just a pain. I also know SBC are leakers.

Un-"know" that; it's not true. Gasket sealers and fluids don't check the brand of the metal and decide accordingly whether to do their thing or not. Especially not oil drain plugs. Except for occasional crappy design details (*cough*SBC valve cover gaskets*cough*) they're all pretty much equal.

Pans FREQUENTLY crack around the "nut" thing that's welded into the pan. ALL brands. More common than you might think. And, can be very hard to see, because the crack is usually circular and concentric with the hole.

^^^
I agree. Happened on my street bike. Until I took the pan off and replaced it, I never would have known there was a crack along the threads. But that could have been caused by me. Story for a different day.

Re: Oil Drain Plug Leak

Before you go spending too much money and time, try replacing the gasket and drain plug if you haven't already. I had this problem on a VW at work. With a new gasket, the plug still leaked a tiny bit. When I looked at the collar of the drain plug, I found that it was slightly flattened on some parts. Replaced the gasket and drain plug.
